Dec. 10, 2010

Final Stats

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Navy swimming and diving teams combined to win all 32 events and set 19 meet records on their way to posting victories over Army Thursday night at the Jimmy Moran Competition Pool in the new Salvation Army Kroc Center of Philadelphia. The Navy men's team recorded an 246-54 victory over the Black Knights, while the Navy women posted a 240.5-59.5 victory over their service academy counterparts.

"We entered the meet tonight hoping to swim fast, and we were able to do so," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison. "We received strong support in all of our events. I'm very proud of the team for how they performed tonight. It was a great team win."

"Congratulations to every one of our team members for what they were able to accomplish tonight," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "All of them worked together to make this a great night."

The Navy women's team has now defeated Army in each of their last 22 dual meets, while the men's team has won the last 20 meetings against the Black Knights.

Thursday's meet was the inaugural event in the new Kroc Center. Members of both the Army and Navy programs will return to the facility Friday to put on free swimming lessons for the youths who reside in the area.

Besides establishing 19 new meet records, Navy swimmers also posted six NCAA B cut qualifying times during the meet.

One of the top individual times in the meet was posted by Laura Gorinski (So., Greensburg, Pa.), who recorded a clocking of 2:12.09 in the 200 breaststroke to break the meet record, her own Navy and Patriot League record set just one week ago and better the NCAA B cut standard. That would be the second of two B cut times recorded by Gorinski. Earlier in the meet she had won the 100 breaststroke with a meet record and B cut qualifying time of 1:02.05.

Three members of the Navy men's team recorded B cut times. Mac Anthony (Jr., Allentown, Pa.) won the 200 free with a meet record and B cut time of 1:37.18, Steve Dukleth's (Jr., Glen Ellyn, Ill.) winning time of 1:47.67 in the 200 fly was a B cut time, and Luke Hoffer (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) broke a meet record and the B cut qualifying standard of 1:58.87 in winning the 200 breaststroke. Additionally, Navy's 400 freestyle relay team won its race with a meet record and B cut time of 2:58.62.

Gorinski was far from the lone Mid to win multiple individual events on the night. On the women's side, Toni Paruso (So., Savannah, Ga.) won the two butterfly events with two meet-record times, Rheanna Vaughn (Fr., Aliso Viejo, Calif.) set meet records in winning the 500 and 1000 freestyle races, Jordyn Nicholl (So., Acworth, Ga.) won both diving boards, and Kellie Darmody (So., Charlotte, N.C.) swept the two backstroke events. Her time of 2:03.39 in winning the 200 back established a new meet record.

Rounding out the list of individual event winners for the women's team were Allison Ranzau (Sr., Alpharetta, Ga.), who won the 200 freestyle, Colleen Randolph (Fr., Annapolis, Md.), who won the 50 freestyle, and Hollis Capuano (So., Wallingford, Conn.), who picked up the win in the 100 freestyle.

Three different Mids won multiple events for the men's team. Anthony also won the 500 free with a time of 4:29.28, Hoffer made it a clean sweep of the breaststroke events with a meet-record time of 55.56 in the 100 breast, and Dukleth also won the 100 fly with a meet-record time of 48.73.

Winning one event on the night for Navy were Justin Vagts (So., Crofton, Md.), set a meet record of 15:13.77 in winning the 1650 free; Gage Trotter (Fr., Conroe, Texas), won the 100 back in a meet-record time of 49.59; Robbie Parker (So., Vienna, Va.), won the 50 free with a clocking of 20.50; Zach Ingold (Fr., Hornell, N.Y.), winner of the 100 free with a time of 44.95; Conor Campbell, Fr., Manassas, Va.), winner of the 200 back with a meet-record time of 1:48.14; Ben Bondurant (So., Atlanta, Ga.), winner of the 200 individual medley with a time of clocking of 1:50.57; Hayden Jones (Fr., Spring, Texas), scored 325.00 points to win the one-meter diving; and Olaf Olson (Sr., Bainbridge Island, Wash.), won the three-meter diving with a score of 371.95.

Both Navy programs are now off from competition until after the first of the year.
