ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's basketball team will open its final week of the regular season Wednesday night when the Mids make the short drive to Washington, D.C., to face American. The game will tip at 7 p.m. in the school's Bender Arena. An audio and video stream of the game will be available to Navy All-Access subscribers.
With two games remaining on the schedule for every team this week, Navy stands alone in third place in the Patriot League standings with a 7-5 record (15-12 overall). A win by Navy in either of its games or a loss by Colgate this week (the Raiders play host to Holy Cross Wednesday prior to making the trip to Annapolis to face the Mids Saturday) would give Navy the No. 3 seed in next week's Patriot League Tournament. Should the Mids and Raiders end up with identical 7-7 records, Colgate would hold the tiebreaker and thus drop Navy down to the No. 4 seed.
The Mids picked up a pair of road victories last week, defeating Holy Cross (77-69) on Wednesday night before winning the annual Star Game against Army (54-48) on Saturday.
Sparking the Mids to the sweep on the week was Angela Myers (Jr., San Antonio, Texas). The guard led Navy in points (33), rebounds (15), assists (11), steals (2) and minutes played (74). Despite her lofty amount of minutes played during the week, she committed just two turnovers over the course of the two games. For her efforts she was named as the Patriot League's Player of the Week.
While the Mids are attempting to solidify third place in the league standings, American enters the game tied for the league lead with Lehigh. Both programs have posted 11-1 records, and each has handed the other their lone loss of the conference campaign.
American recorded a 62-45 victory over Navy when the two teams faced each other earlier this season in Annapolis. The Eagles shot 39 percent from the field while holding the Mids to a mark of 33 percent. Additionally, American held advantages over Navy in both rebounds (40-32) and turnovers (8-15).
Myers led the Navy efforts in the game with 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists. She was joined in double figures by teammate K.C. Gordon (Sr., Vienna, Va.) with 10 points.
For the Eagles, the trio of Michelle Kirk, Liz Leer and Lisa Strack was a combined 19-of-38 from floor and accounted for 49 of American's 62 points scored in the game. The remainder of the squad was a combined 5-of-23 on the night and accrued 13 points.
