Men First, Women Fourth at ECAC Swim Meet

Feb. 26, 2010

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Navy swimming programs combined to win four races Friday on the opening day of the ECAC Open Championship being contested in Pittsburgh. The three-day meet runs through Sunday at Trees Pool on the University of Pittsburgh campus.

One week after sweeping the two team titles at the Patriot League Championship, the Navy men's team leads the field at the ECAC Championship while the Navy women's squad stands in fourth place.

Laura Gorinski (Fr., Greenburg, Pa.), who was selected as the Patriot League Women's Rookie Swimmer of the Year after winning a trio of events at last week's Patriot League Championship, continued her winning ways Friday by posting a time of 2:03.61 to win the 200 individual medley race. On the men's side of the meet, William Norton (So., Tyler Texas) recorded a time of 4:27.61 to lead all swimmers in the 500 freestyle. Joining Gorinski and Norton in the winner's circle from Navy was Robbie Parker (Fr., Vienna, Va.), who posted a time of 20.60 to win the 50 freestyle.

The Navy women's team concluded the night by having its 400 medley relay team record a time of 3:48.87 to win the event.

The Navy men's team, which won the ECAC Championship last year, totaled 177 points Friday and leads the field by 23 points. Standing in second place is Rider with 154 points.

"It was a good first day for us," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "We had a sharp morning and were able to come back at night and drop even more time and earn a lot of points. We took a step back at the start of the night when our 200 freestyle relay team was disqualified. That can be a challenge to overcome. It was important for us to take a step back and collect ourselves, and we were able to do just that. I was pleased with how we handled the situation."

The women's standings has Harvard in first place with 213.5 points, Marist in second with 185 points, Rider in third with 132.5 points and the Mids in fourth place with 94 points.
