ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's basketball team will close its regular season Saturday night when the Midshipmen play host to Colgate in Alumni Hall.
Prior to the game's slated 7 p.m. tip, Navy will honor the four members of its Class of 2010 -- Kelly Altschul (Highland Village, Texas), Kristin Bowen (Monroeville, N.J.), Beth Reed (Indianapolis, Ind.) and team captain K.C. Gordon (Vienna, Va.) -- in a Senior Night ceremony starting at 6:48 p.m.
The game can be heard locally on WNAV-AM 1430 starting at 6:45 p.m., with an audio and video feed of the game available to Navy All-Access subscribers. Additionally, live statistics from the game can be viewed for no charge at www.NavySports.com(.)
For those interested in attending the game, all kids will be admitted free when accompanied by a paid adult.
Fans are reminded that all non-Department of Defense stickered vehicles must park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium ($5) and ride the shuttle bus (free) to and from the Navy grounds.
The opening two rounds of the Patriot League Tournament will be played March 6 and 7 in Worcester, Mass. Of the eight teams in the league, only Navy knows its seed heading into the last day of the season. Regardless of the outcome of any of the four games being contested Saturday, the Mids will enter the tournament as the third-seeded team. Which team Navy faces in the quarterfinal round of the tournament is a different matter. Any one of five teams -- Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross and Lafayette -- could end up as the sixth-seeded team and Navy opponent under the different possible scenarios.
Navy (15-13, 7-6 Patriot League) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday night when the Mids dropped a 66-38 decision to American in Washington, D.C. The Mids trailed by five points late in the first half, but the Eagles scored 19 of the first 25 points of the second half to pull away from Navy. In addition to holding a 39-24 advantage on the glass, American also made 27 field goals to Navy's 16 and sank eight three-point field goals to Navy's four.
While the Mids are secure in their playoff position, Colgate (10-17, 5-8 Patriot League) could receive a tournament seed of as high as fourth or as low as sixth.
The first meeting of the season between the two teams saw Colgate stage a late rally to post a 56-54 win over Navy. The Mids took a 34-26 lead early in the second half, but went the next nine minutes without connecting on a field goal attempt. That allowed the Raiders to go on a 21-6 run that gave them a 47-40 lead.
The Mids soon trailed 49-43 with four minutes left in the game, but a short while later Bowen's sixth three-point field goal of the game allowed Navy to take a 54-52 lead with 100 seconds left to play. Colgate tied the game on its next time down the court, then took possession of the ball with 39 seconds remaining following an offensive foul by the Mids. Jhazmine Lynch would score on a scooping layup with 14.5 seconds left to give the Raiders a two-point lead. The Mids then turned the ball over with four seconds left to end the contest.
Bowen's 25 points paced all players in the game, while Katie Garman led Colgate with 16 points.
