Final Stats
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Navy women's basketball team connected on over 50 percent of its shots from the field and made 12 three-point field goals during a 61-46 victory over Bucknell, Saturday night at Sojka Pavilion in Lewisburg, Pa.
The Navy win ended a four-game losing streak for the Mids to Bucknell in games played in Lewisburg and gave Navy its first regular season sweep of the Bison since the 1998-99 season. The Mids had posted a 70-40 victory over the Bison one month ago in Annapolis.
The Navy (12-11, 4-4 Patriot League) offense was clicking right from the start of the game as the Mids made their first four attempts from the floor in jumping out to a 10-2 lead. The Navy advantage quickly grew to 15 points at 23-8 before the Mids went into halftime holding a 31-21 lead over the Bison (7-14, 3-5).
Bucknell tallied the opening points of the second half on a field goal to pull to within eight points. The Navy advantage was soon 11 points at 38-27 when the Mids went on a 12-4 run to take a 50-31 lead with just under 13 minutes remaining in the contest. The Bison were able to narrow the margin down to 11 points again at both 50-39 and 52-41, with the latter score coming with nearly six minutes showing on the clock. The Mids would respond with a 7-0 run to put the game away.
"We had a really good week of practice, so I give a lot of credit to how we prepared ourselves for this game," said Navy head coach Stefanie Pemper. "We were able to execute a lot of the things we worked on this week, so the players deserve a lot of credit to the players for that."
Navy made just one more field goal than Bucknell did in the game -- 23-22 -- but the Mids shot 52.3 percent from the floor and knocked down 12-of-21 (57.1%) attempts from beyond the three-point arc. Conversely, the Bison shot 36.1 percent from the field and were just 2-of-12 (16.7%) in their attempts from outside of the three-point line.
While Navy tallied 36 of its 61 points from three-point range, Bucknell accrued 32 of its 46 points from inside of the paint. The Bison also grabbed 17 offensive rebounds -- to Navy's five -- and held a 35-29 advantage on the glass in the game.
Neither team shot the ball particularly well from the foul line where the Mids were 3-of-6 and the Bison were 0-of-6.
"Our defense did a pretty good job," said Pemper. "We did give up far too many offensive rebounds. Bucknell played hard on the boards tonight. I think you could arguably say that the scrappier team did not win the game."
Cassie Consedine (Jr., Bartlesville, Okla.) had her best game since the start of conference play as she sank four three-point field goals, scored 15 points, grabbed nine rebounds and recorded six blocked shots. Her block tally was just one shy of tying her own school record.
"Cassie played a complete game," said Pemper. "I was very happy with her leadership and how she came to play."
Also playing well was Angela Myers (Jr., San Antonio, Texas), who led Navy in scoring with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor, dished out six assists and swiped three steals.
"Angela was terrific," said Pemper. "She really wanted the ball in her hands. She was very effective at both distributing and scoring. She had a lot of confidence with her shot tonight."
Joining the duo in double figures on the night was K.C. Gordon (Sr., Vienna, Va.) with 12 points.
Bucknell was led in scoring by Joyce Novacek, who tallied 16 points.
Navy will play host to Lehigh Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
