DURHAM, N.C. - The third-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team opened the game with a 9-0 run while holding Navy without a goal for nearly a 20-minute stretch on its way to a 19-10 victory on Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
The Blue Devils, whose only loss this season came at the hands of No. 2 Maryland, pick up their fifth-straight victory to improve to 9-1 on the year. The Mids, meanwhile, fall to 9-2 overall on the season. Both of Navy's setbacks this season have come at the hands of nationally ranked foes.
"Duke came out today and really played a terrific game," said Navy head coach
Cindy Timchal. "That's a talented team with a lot of great players. They certainly showed why they are one of the top teams in the country this afternoon. "That being said, I thought this was a really positive experience for us. We fought the whole way through, never gave up and played with great confidence and courage in the second half. This will be an invaluable experience for us as we prepare for the stretch run of Patriot League games."
After an early yellow card was handed out to Navy standout Erin Rawlick (Sr./Forest Hill, Md.), senior All-American midfielder Lindsay Gilbride opened the day's scoring with her first of a game-high four goals.
Gilbride factored in on each of the Blue Devils' first four goals, three of which came with Rawlick serving the three-minute penalty, and finished with a share of the game-high with six points (4 g, 2 a). Junior Christie Kaestner also contributed six points on three goals and three assists for the hosts.
Danielle Vivonetto (So./Rocky Point, N.Y.) got Navy onto the scoreboard with an unassisted goal, her 39th of the year, with 10:40 left in the first half. Caitlin Mandrin Hill (So./Annapolis, Md.) would add a goal for the Mids, who trailed by an 11-2 margin at the break.
The Blue Devils would extend their lead to 17-3 with a 6-1 run over the first 13:55 of the second half. Led by Jasmine DePompeo (Fr./Sayville, N.Y.), however, the Mids would continue to battle the nation's third-ranked team right to the finish, closing out the contest on a 7-2 run.
Depompeo tied her season-high goal total with three second-half tallies on four shots. Vivonetto added a second goal, running her season total to 40, and a pair of assists to finish with a team-high four points. Mandrin Hill (2 g, 1 a) and Rawlick (1 g, 2 a) each finished with three points apiece, while Kierstin King (So./Upperco, Md.) contributed a goal and a pair of game-high totals with five ground balls and four caused turnovers
Duke finished the game with a 41-22 advantage in shots and a 16-12 edge in the draw circle. Each team committed 15 turnovers, while the Mids won the ground ball battle with 22 to the Blue Devils' 19.
Michelle Verbeeck (Fr./Waiding River, N.Y.) entered the game early in the first half in relief of Elaina Ponchione (So./Silver Spring, Md.) and made a career-high 11 saves while allowing 13 goals over the final 52-plus minutes. Freshman goalie Kaitlin Gaiss made eight saves to record the win for Duke.
Navy will play its third game in five days when it returns to action Monday afternoon against Presbyterian in a 4:00 pm contest at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
