Maryland Posts Win over Navy Men's Tennis Team

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Maryland won a pair of doubles matches and four straight set singles matches to post a 7-0 victory over the Navy men's tennis team, Thursday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.

"I'm tired of the losing," said Navy head coach John Officer. "This has to stop, and it has to stop this weekend."

The doubles point was not decided until the third and final match was completed. After Maryland's (10-2) Jesse Kiuru and Tommy Laine combined to post an 8-3 win over Owen Bullard (Jr., Concord, N.C.) and Eddie Konrad (So., The Woodlands, Texas), the Mids (4-8) were able to even the matches at one apiece when Zach Nicholson (So., Bowie, Md.) and Marcus Rebersak (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.) recorded an 8-4 victory over Graham Knowlton and Sergio Wyss at No. 3 doubles. However, the Terps would secure the doubles point when their tandem of John Collins and Mathias Sarrazin won an 8-3 decision over Nick Birger (Jr., Belleville, Ill.) and Ramsey Lemaich (Sr., Danville, Calif.) at No. 2 doubles.

Maryland would go on to win the first four singles matches to be completed to clinch the overall victory. The last two matches saw the Terps win in a pair of third-set tiebreakers that were used in place of a full third set. At No. 2 singles, Kiuru won a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-2) decision over Rebersak, while at No. 5 singles Ryan Lissner posted a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) victory over Nicholas Gutsche.

Navy returns to the Tose Family Tennis Center this weekend for matches Saturday against UMBC and Sunday versus Delaware. Both matches start at 12 Noon.
