ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The 18th-ranked Navy water polo team split its two games on Saturday, defeating Bucknell, 10-9, in the afternoon and falling to 17th-ranked Princeton, 7-6, in the nightcap. The split drops Navy to 14-5 overall on the season and 1-1 in the CWPA Southern Divison.
In the win over Bucknell, Navy jumped out to a 4-2 lead after one quarter, and after Bucknell cut the lead to 4-3 early in the second quarter, the Mids ran off four straight goals to grab an 8-3 halftime lead.
Bucknell would outscore the Midshipmen, 3-1, in the each of the third and fourth quarters, but could not tie the contest up and Navy held on for a 10-9 victory.
Stevie Ray and Archie Warren led Navy with three goals each, while four other players scored one goal each. Luke Baldwin dished out two assists in the victory. Anthony Gutierrez stopped 11 shots and dished out two assists in goal for Navy.
In the second contest of the day, Navy led 6-3 with possession of the ball with 22 seconds left in the third quarter, but gave up a Princeton goal with just three seconds left in the third quarter.
Then, tied at 6-6 late in the contest, Navy gave up a late goal and couldn't get a shot off on its final possession, falling to the Tigers, 7-6.
Navy was plagued all day long with ejections. In the first game against Bucknell, Navy was whistled for 13 ejections to the Bison's six. In the second game, Navy had eight ejections to Princeton's two.
The Mids will travel to Johns Hopkins at 4:30 pm and George Washington at 8:00 pm on Wednesday, October 6.
