ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Amanda Griffin rallied for a three-set victory at No. 1 singles, but the Syracuse women's tennis team won the other five singles matches and all three doubles matches to hand the Navy women's tennis team a 6-1 setback on Friday afternoon at the Brigade Sports Complex.
The loss drops Navy to 1-3 overall, while Syracuse was competing in its season opener.
"As was Maryland yesterday, Syracuse was a very good team. They were very physical and I liked our response to the challenges they presented," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "The doubles was hard fought on all the courts and just came down to a couple of keys moments in the set. Our singles is improving with each match that we play and we are starting to execute better."
Navy senior Amanda Griffin (Roseville, Calif.) earned her first dual-meet victory of the season with a hard-fought 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3) victory over Alessondra Parra at No. 1 singles. After Parra controlled the first set, Griffin responded with an impressive effort and made all the right adjustments in the three-set victory.
"It was a great comeback by Amanda Griffin. She fought back and played really well after losing the first set," said Puryear.
Navy freshman Darien Sears (Silver Spring, Md.) also had a strong performance falling to Aleah Marrow, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 4 singles.
"Darien Sears fought her heart out but lost a tough one," said Puryear. "She showed a lot of fight in the match."
Freshman Erin Snook (Tampa, Fla.) also gave a strong effort falling 7-5, 6-1, at No. 5 singles to the Orange's Christina Tan.
In doubles play, Navy won 13 games, but couldn't get over the hump, dropping all three matches. The best performance may have come from Emani Decquir (So. / Sacramento, Calif.) and Stefanie Ton (So. / Milpitas, Calif.) who dropped an 8-6 decision at No. 2 doubles.
Navy will be back in action on Saturday morning at 8:00 am against Saint Joseph's.
"Saint Joseph's will be another good challenge for us. Their new coach is well known in tennis circles and he has done a good job of infusing his team with new talent. It should be a very competitive match," said Puryear.
