HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Colgate outhit the Navy volleyball team by nearly 100 points in a 25-23, 25-20, 25-19 victory by the Raiders over the Midshipmen Saturday afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y.
"We did not pass the ball well on first contact today," said Navy head coach Larry Bock. "But that is something we can work on. Colgate again did a nice job of exploiting some matchups against us."
Navy (6-18, 1-8 Patriot League) couldn't have asked for a better start to the match than what took place Saturday as the Mids jumped out to a 15-6 lead over Colgate (10-14, 6-3) in the early part of the opening set. The Raiders slowly whittled the margin down and soon tied the frame at 21-21. Navy took leads of 22-21 and 23-22, but the Raiders responded each ensuing play with a sideout to even the score. Back-to-back kills by Kaylee Dougherty would complete the Colgate comeback and give the Raiders the win in the first set.
Their momentum carried over into the start of the second set as Colgate quickly built a 10-3 advantage and it held a lead of at least six points over the remainder of the set.
The Raiders tried to pull away from the Mids at the very start of the third set by scoring four of the opening five points of the frame. Navy answered and closed to within one point of Colgate at 12-11. That was followed by the Raiders going on a quick 3-0 run that gave them enough of a cushion to hold off any additional Navy rallies.
Colgate's offense tallied 46 kills and hit .241 in the match, while holding the Navy attack to 30 kills and a .147 hitting percentage. The Mids held a 9-6 advantage over the Raiders in blocks, with Colgate hauling in 42 digs to 36 for Navy.
Erin Fortner (So., Villa Hills, Ky.) led Navy with 12 kills in the match, while Carolyn Ewert (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif.) added nine kills to the Navy offense. Defensively for the Mids, Holly Berger (Sr., Claremont, Calif.) grabbed 12 digs, Katie Bray (Jr., Cary, N.C.) tallied 12 digs and both Ewert and Alex Cassel (Fr., Sandy, Utah) posted three blocks.
For Colgate, Dougherty tallied 11 kills and a .429 attack percentage in the match.
"I feel we are coming on as a team," said Bock. "We are much improved from last weekend. We'll be back to work on Monday and we are aiming to do some damage over the last few weekends of the season."
Navy's final road match of the season will be played Friday night when the Mids play at American.
