BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Senior team captain Jordan Sugars was voted to the preseason all-Patriot League first team, the league office announced on Thursday at the annual Patriot League Men's Basketball media day held at the Arts Quest Center at SteelStacks in Bethlehem, Pa. Voting was done by league coaches and sports information directors and representatives could not vote for their own players or teams.
Sugars, a 6-3, 219-pound guard from Winchester, Va., is the league's second-leading returning scorer and fourth-leading returning rebounder after averaging 16.0 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game during the 2010-11 season and is one of three players nationally (UC Santa Barbara's Orlando Johnson and Missouri State's Kyle Weems) to return after averaging at leat 16.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg and making 60 or more three-pointers. He is already one of the most-accomplished guards in school history, becoming just the eighth player to score 1,000 points (currently with 1,015) by the end of his junior season and ranking fifth on the career three-pointers made list with 155. Sugars needs just 11 rebounds to become the ninth player in school history with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds and with 485 points and 111 rebounds, he will become just the fourth player (David Robinson, Vernon Butler and Kevin Sinnett) with 1,500 points and 600 rebounds. Sugars has scored in double figures in 25 of his last 26 games, including seven straight contests entering the 2011-12 season.
Sugars was joined on the team by junior C.J. McCollum of Lehigh, Holy Cross senior Devin Brown, Lafayette junior Tony Johnson and Bucknell junior Mike Muscala. McCollum was named the preseason Player of the Year for the second straight season.
Navy was selected seventh in the preseason poll, behind defending league champion Bucknell (14 first-place votes), Lehigh (two first-place votes), Holy Cross, Lafayette, American and Colgate. Army was picked eighth.
The Midshipmen will open the season on Friday, November 11, when it heads to Farmville, Va., to take on Longwood at 7:00 pm. The home opener comes two days later against Penn State-Altoona at 4:00 pm on Sunday, November 13, in Alumni Hall.
