EASTON, Pa. - The Navy women's soccer team (8-4-2, 1-1 PL) suffered a 1-0 loss at Lafayette (7-3-1, 2-0 PL) in Patriot League play on Friday evening at Oaks Stadium. Although Navy outshot Lafayette, 10-4, in the contest, the hosts got the only goal they would need in the 16th minute of play.
"We had several chances to score and we played at a high level for most of the game, but sometimes the results don't fall your way," head coach Carin Gabarra said. "With another road game coming Sunday against Lehigh, we just need to forget about the result and focus on the quality of soccer that we have played."
Lafayette senior Janelle Pierson tallied the game's only goal on 15:30. Lafayette had a free kick that Navy cleared away, but the Leopards won the ball about 40 yards away from the goal. Freshman Alex Reisinger fed the ball to Pierson, who chipped the ball over Navy's defense, which was moving upfield, and into the net.
Some of Navy's best chances in the contest came in the first five minutes of action. Sophomore Ashlynn Soellner had three shots early in the game, but one was saved by Lafayette keeper Lauren Smedley and two were off target.
Junior Brittany Fruin had a good look on goal in the 34th minute, but her shot went just wide.
Soellner led Navy with three shots and freshmen Sam Lee and Jade Seabrook each had two shots.
Smedley made four saves in the contest for her sixth shutout of the year. The junior was tabbed as the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year in 2010.
In addition to outshooting Lafayette, 10-4, Navy also led in shots on goal, 5-2. Lafayette held the edge in corner kicks, 5-4. Navy outshot Lafayette, 6-1, in the first half, but the Leopards scored on their only attempt.
Navy will next play at Lehigh (1-1 in the Patriot League) on Sunday at 1:00 PM.
