Navy Extends Swimming/Diving Winning Streaks Over Army

Dec. 8, 2011

Final Stats

WEST POINT N.Y. - The Navy swimming and diving teams combined to win 26 of 32 events on their way to sweeping Army in the annual Star Meets between the two programs. The Navy women won 15 events in recording a 226.5-73.5 triumph over the Black Knights, while the Navy men tallied 11 event wins in posting a 186-114 victory.

The win for the Navy men's team was the 21st consecutive victory in the series for the Mids over the Black Knights. On the women's side, Navy has now won 23 straight meets against Army, which establishes a new record for the most consecutive victories by a team in any sport in Army-Navy series history.

The Navy programs combined to establish seven school records, three Patriot League records, 11 meet records, eight Crandall Pool records and attain nine NCAA `B' cut times.

"We had a lot of inspired swims tonight," said women's swimming head coach John Morrison. "Everybody swam fast. It is one thing to win the events, but it is another when your depth scores three people in an event. That really allows a team to separate itself, and takes some of the pressure off of the swimmers in the next race. They can just focus on going fast and swimming their race. Our depth did just that tonight."

Laura Gorinski headlined the results of the women's meet as she recorded three individual event victories, all of which set Patriot League, Army-Navy Meet, Navy and Crandall Pool records and were NCAA `B' cut times. She first won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:00.72, then posted a time of 2:11.10 to win the 200 breaststroke. She would cap her evening by winning the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:00.33.

Gorinski was far from the lone Mid to either win multiple events or have a record breaking performance during the meet. Kellie Darmody set a pair of meet, Navy and pool records in winning the 100 backstroke in a time of 55.61 and the 200 back with a clocking of 1:58.67. Her latter time also was an NCAA `B' cut time. Courtney Vandament won both diving boards with scores of 268.95 on the three meter and 261.07 on the one meter. Rheanna Vaughn set a new meet and pool record and attained an NCAA `B' cut qualifying time with her posting of 2:00.44 in winning the 200 fly. Toni Paruso set new school, meet and pool records with her NCAA `B' cut qualifying time of 54.57 in winning the 100 fly. Ange Sawick set a new meet record with her winning time of 10:01.95 in the 1000 freestyle. Hollis Capuano won the 100 free and 200 free events with her respective times of 51.54 and 1:50.62. Additionally, Haley Nowak won the 500 freestyle with a winning time of 4:59.02.

Navy also won both relay events. The foursome of Darmody, Gorinski, Paruso and Capuano tallied a time of 1:41.71 to win the 200 medley relay. That clocking was a new Navy, meet and pool record and also was an NCAA `B' cut time. The Mids then closed the event by having its team of Capuano, Bryn Moriarty, Danielle Reminger and Darmody win the 400 freestyle relay with a meet-record time of 3:26.57.

"It was a great team effort from beginning to end," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "They guys have worked all year to put together an effort like this in the meet and it was nice to see them perform the way they did tonight."

Gage Trotter broke the Army-Navy meet record with his time of 49.31 that gave him the victory in the 100 backstroke. Meanwhile, Mac Anthony and Mark Meyer both attained NCAA `B' cut times during the meet. Anthony's winning time of 1:37.20 in the 200 free met the time standard, as did Meyer's clocking of 1:47.85 in winning the 200 fly.

Anthony became a multiple event winner during the meet when his time of 4:29.48 gave him the win in the 500 freestyle race. Joining Anthony with multiple wins was Luke Hoffer, who won the 100 breaststroke (56.63) and 200 breaststroke (2:00.65) events.

Also for the Mids, Will Norton won the 1000 freestyle in a time of 9:24.92, Conor Campbell was the winner of the 200 backstroke race thanks to his time of 1:48.98 and Ben Bondurant posted a time of 1:51.35 to win the 200 individual medley.

Navy also recorded victories in both relay races. The night began with Trotter, Ben Grove, Steve Dukleth and Sean Bagent posting a time of 1:30.66 to win the 200 medley relay, and concluded with Hugh Davison, Bagent, K.C. Linn and Anthony combining for a time of 3:01.57 to win the 400 freestyle relay.

Both Navy teams are now of from competition until early January.
