Women's Basketball Looks to Bounce Back Saturday

Feb. 11, 2011

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- After dropping its second game of the Patriot League season Wednesday night, the Navy women's basketball team will play Saturday at Lafayette in a 1 p.m. game at the Kirby Sports Center in Easton, Pa.

Free live statistics will be available at www.NavySports.com, as will a link for a video stream of the game that will be accessible to Navy All-Access subscribers.

The Mids saw their record fall to 7-2 in league play with a 63-59 loss to Lehigh Wednesday night. A 10-0 run allowed the Mountain Hawks to build a 20-10 lead late in the first half. The margin between the teams would grow to as many as 13 points early in the second half before the Mids cut it down to three points at 54-51 with a little more than four minutes showing on the clock. The teams would end up trading points over the rest of the night to allow Lehigh to hold on for the win.

Cassie Consedine (Sr., Bartlesville, Okla.) led Navy in scoring in the game with 13 points, while Jade Geif (Fr., Lakeview, Minn.) scored 12 points and Erin Edwards (Jr., Hockessin, Del.) added 10 points.

Navy remains in first place in the league standings with a 7-2 record, but its cushion over second-place American dwindled to just one game. The Eagles have posted a 6-3 record in league play and stand one game in front of a trio of teams with 5-3 records in Army, Holy Cross and Lehigh. Bucknell and Lafayette are tied for sixth place with identical 3-6 records, while Colgate is in eighth place with a 2-6 record.

The remaining games in the league to played Saturday are at American at Colgate, Army at Lehigh and Holy Cross at Bucknell.

Lafayette picked up its third win of the league season Wednesday night with a 65-42 victory at home over Colgate. The win stopped a two-game skid for the Leopards.

The Kirby Sports Center has been one of the tougher places for the Mids to play at in recent years. Navy has dropped four of its last six games against the Leopards at the facility, including a 46-43 decision last year. The Mids also narrowly won a 60-57 contest over Lafayette two years ago in Easton after losing to the Leopards in both 2007 (68-65) and 2008 (60-44).

Navy holds a 36-19 advantage in the all-time series with Lafayette, but the Leopards enter Saturday's game with a slim 13-12 edge over the Mids in games played in Easton.

Navy came away with a 61-52 victory over Lafayette when the two teams met earlier this season in Annapolis. The Leopards held the Mids to 26 percent shooting from the floor and a 2 of 14 effort (14.3%) from beyond the three-point arc in building a 24-17 lead at halftime. Navy soon took a 30-29 lead with 14 minutes left to play in the game, but the lead would change hands several times over the next few minutes of play. Lafayette held a 36-34 lead when Consedine drilled three-point field goals on each of Navy's next three possessions to give the Mids a 43-36 lead with 6:45 remaining on the clock. Navy would hold a lead of at least six points over the remainder of the game.

The Mids scored just 32 points in the first 30 minutes of play, but tallied 29 points in the last 10 minutes. While the Mids shot 83.3 percent from beyond the three-point arc and 72.7 percent in all field goal attempts in the last 10 minutes of the game, the Navy defense held Lafayette to 5 of 16 (31.3%) shooting from the floor over the same span.

Consedine ended the game with a total of six three-point field goals made and scored 18 points. She was joined in double figures by Geif, who tallied 14 points, 13 boards and four blocks, and Edwards, who chipped in 11 points.

LaKeisha Wright scored 16 points to lead all Lafayette players in scoring.
