Annapolis, Md. - Junior Arian Davis claimed the pentathlon with 3,272 points to highlight the first day of the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championship at Wesley A. Brown Field House. Davis earned 10 team points for the Mids, who lead the team scoring after the first day of competition. Action will continue Saturday at 10:30 am with the weight throw.
Davis used a superb long jump of 16-10 (5.13m) to move into first place in the pentathlon standings after the fourth event. Davis then ran a 2:36.17 in the 800m run to hold off a late surge by Army's Tonya Stallard and Lehigh's Brooke Astor.
Davis' long jump effort was the best in the field and earned 595 points. Davis placed third in the 60m hurdles at 9.43 for 822 points and was also third in the high jump at 5-1 for 678 points. She was also third in the shot put at 34-3 ½ for 559 points.
Davis entered the final pentathlon event, the 800m, with a 67-point lead over Stallard. A waterfall start was used in the 12-athlete field and Davis was knocked to the ground in the first turn and the official called for a restart.
Davis got off to a better start the second time around and held a lead over the first 100 meters before the rest of the pack caught up. Astor won the race at 2:26.24 and was able to move into third but Davis and her fifth-place 800 finish time of 2:36.17 was enough to earn 618 points and hold off Stallard (2:31.61) in the overall standings.
Stallard totaled 3260 points, just 12 less than Davis. Davis placed second at the indoor pentathlon last season and has two outdoor heptathlon runner-up finishes. This is her first Patriot League individual title.
The pentathlon was the only event of the day on the women's side.
