ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Army's defense held the Navy women's basketball team to seven field goals over the last 25 minutes of a 57-46 victory over the Midshipmen Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall in Annapolis.
"Army's players played better than ours did," said Navy head coach Stefanie Pemper. "Army made plays to gain emotion in the first half. We had some good shots that did not go in and those could have given us some of the emotion we needed. I don't question that we were ready to go and play with heart, but we have to make plays to do so."
The opening 15 minutes of the game saw the score tied twice and the lead change hands seven times. Navy (15-11, 8-4 Patriot League) took what would prove to be its largest lead of the game when a jumper from Erin Edwards (Jr., Hockessin, Del.) gave the Mids a 21-16 lead with just under six minutes left to play in the first half. However, Army (12-14, 6-6 Patriot League) would close the half on a 15-2 run to take a 31-23 lead at intermission.
The Black Knights would then extend their advantage to double figures at 37-26 less than three minutes into the second half. Navy narrowed the margin down to eight points at 37-28, but Army would lead by double digits over the last 14 minutes of the game.
Navy's offense started out playing fairly well. The Mids were 8 of 20 from the field (40%) through the jumper by Edwards, but the remainder of the game saw Navy connect on just seven of its last 29 field goal attempts (24.1%). This final 25-minute span also saw the Mids shoot just 2 of 12 from three-point range (16.6%) and make only 9 of 16 free throw attempts (56.3%).
Conversely, Army's offense started off a little slow but quickly found a higher gear. The Black Knights began the game by sinking six of their first 21 shots from the floor (28.6%) and three of their initial seven three-point attempts (42.9%), but over the last 25 minutes of play they shot 48.4 percent from the field (15 of 31) and 57.1 percent from outside of the three-point arc (8 of 14).
Navy's three scoring leaders on the season -- Angela Myers (Sr., San Antonio, Texas), Cassie Consedine (Sr., Bartlesville, Okla.) and Jade Geif (Fr., Lakeview, Minn.) -- combined to shoot 6 of 31 (19.4%) from the field. Consedine scored eight of Navy's opening 12 points of the game, but did not register another basket of any kind over the last 30 minutes of the game.
"I was very impressed by Army's seniors," said Pemper. "We felt the more mature team would win the game. We didn't bring enough of that today. I was disappointed with our fight. We told the team we didn't like the pace of the game in the second half and we wanted to go more in transition and be more aggressive, but we didn't do that."
Consedine's eight points led the Mids in scoring on the day. Myers, Edwards and Audrey Bauer (Fr., Lake Zurich, Ill.) all scored seven points, with Myers adding six assists to the Navy effort as well.
Erin Anthony led Army with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Navy will close the home portion of its regular season Wednesday when the Mids play host to American. The Eagles are one game in front of both the Mids and Lehigh in the Patriot League standings with just two games remaining.
