CAMDEN, N.J. - The Navy lightweight rowing team competed in its final races of the year on Saturday at the IRA National Championships in Camden, N.J., on the Cooper River. Navy's varsity eight boat placed seventh, overall, while the varsity four took fifth.

"We had a disappointing day today," said Navy head coach Steve Perry. " We definitely had expectations of doing much better."

After finishing fourth in its heat with a time of 6:01.103, Navy dropped to the petite final.

"We rowed a good first 75% of the race, but didn't have the extra gear we needed in the final 500 meters," said Perry. "It certainly wasn't the finish we wanted today, but it fuels the fires for next year"

In the petite final, Navy defeated Marietta for first place by nearly 10 seconds with a time of 5:57.474.

In the varsity four's only race of the day, the crew took fifth in the grand final. Navy posted a 6:38.419 to take fifth, as Yale clocked a 6:37.113 to just edge the Mids for fourth place.
