ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Fourteen different players scored goals to help the 15th-ranked Navy water polo team to a 23-3 victory over Gannon in the season opener for the Midshipmen. Navy is now 1-0 on the season, entering tonight's game against 11th-ranked St. Francis, N.Y.
Navy was not pushed in the contest, as the Mids jumped out to a 9-0 lead after one quarter. The lead would swell to 14-0 before Gannon got on the board late in the second quarter.
Navy would push the advantage to 16-1 at halftime and 20-1 after three quarters before coasting in for the 23-3 win.
Kyle Wertz (San Diego, Calif.) led the Mids with four goals, all coming in the second quarter. Senior Stevie Ray (Baytown, Texas) added three goals and Jesse Walker (Seattle, Wash.) and Pat Seipp (Baltimore, Md.) scored twice. Nine other players tallied one goal each.
Anthony Gutierrez (Long Beach, Calif.) stopped three shots in goal in limited action.
