FAIRFAX, Va. - The Navy lightweight rowing team began its 2012-13 season on Sunday with the Occoquan Challenge in Fairfax, Va., where it had a total of 15 entries and took home titles in two races. Sunday's 4.5km stake races took place on the Occoquan River.
Navy's novice eight crew easily won its race as its time of 13:23 was over two minutes ahead of second-place Virginia. The Mids other top finish came in the championship doubles race as the crew posted a time of 14:36 to win.
In the championship fours race, Navy crews took spots two through five - just missing first place by two seconds. Navy's second-place crew clocked a time of 14:01, which was two seconds behind Virginia. Navy's other four boat competed in the club race where it also took second place by a slim margin. The Mids placed second with a time of 14:41 - just one second behind the Capital Rowing Club.
Navy's varsity eight crews competed in the championship eight race and took the second, third, fifth and seventh spots. The Mids' second place crew turned in a time of 13:34 and the third place boat clocked a 13:49. Virginia won the race with a time of 13:18.
The Midshipmen will be back in action next Saturday at the Navy Day Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa.
