ORLANDO, Fla. -- For the fifth time this spring, the Navy women's tennis team rallied for victory after losing the doubles point, this time in a 5-2 decision over Quinnpiac on its annual Spring Break trip to Florida. The Midshipmen improved to 13-1 with the victory, while Quinnipiac, the 2011 Northeast Conference Champions, fell to 2-4 overall.
The Bobcats' losses have come to Rutgers, Army, Coastal Carolina and now Navy.
"This was a tough, hard-fought match. Quinnipiac is a very good team and the defending Northeast Conference champs and today they showed why," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "It was great to play outdoors for the first time this year. This match and tomorrow's match (vs. Long Island) are just the type we need at this stage of the season."
Navy dropped the doubles point after dropping decisions at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. Navy actually won the first completed doubles match at No. 3 by Dye Das (Jr. / Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Darien Sears (So. / Silver Spring, Md.) by an 8-4 score, but lost the next two matches to lose the doubles point.
But much as it has done all season, Navy rallied for the victory after dropping the doubles matches. Erin Snook (So. / Tampa, Fla.) tied the match at 1-1 when her opponent retired after Snook had won the first set, 7-6 (3). The win moves Snook to 15-5 overall and a sparkling 11-1 record in dual-meet play.
Freshman Gabby Winter, playing in her hometown of Orlando, pushed the Navy lead to 2-1 with a 0-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles. The win was her team-leading 17th victory of the year, already ranking fifth on the single-season victories list.
After Quinnipiac tied the match at 2-2 with a victory at No. 1 singles, Navy responded by winning the next three matches for the final margin. Noelle Kaufmann (Fr. / Westlake, Ohio) remained unbeaten during the spring dual-meet season with a 7-5, 7-5 triumph at No. 5 singles, improving her overall record to 13-5 and her spring record to 8-0.
Emani Decquir (Jr. / Sacramento, Calif.) clinched the match for the Midshipmen with a gritty 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles. For good measure, Stefanie Ton (Jr. / Milpitas, Calif.) won at No. 3 singles by a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 decision for the final 5-2 margin.
Navy will remain in Orlando on Wednesday to take on Long Island University at 2:30 pm.
