ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Junior midfielder Taylor Batye and sophomore forward Morgan Dankanich each scored to lead the Navy women's soccer team (1-1-0) to a 2-1 win over UMBC (0-1-1) at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility on Sunday afternoon.

"We did some things well but there are still some aspects we need to tighten up on and get better at," head coach Carin Gabarra said. "That's what the first weekend is for and we are starting to see the big picture of where we are as a team."

Batye put Navy on the board in the 15th minute after junior forward Ashlynn Soellner settled a loose ball and passed it to Batye who one-touched it into the net from eight yards out. It was Batye's first career goal.

Just 57 seconds later Navy scored again when junior forward Paloma Perez made a cross from the right side to a cutting Dankanich who beat the keeper at the near post to put the Mids up, 2-0.

Dankanich was a constant threat to score throughout the game and her 10 shots tied the Navy school record. Three players had registered 10 shots in a game before with the most recent being Stacy Finley in 2003.

Dankanich also hit the cross bar in the 77th minute, just missing a second tally.

Dankanich now has five career game-winning goals.

UMBC tallied its lone goal in the 59th minute after Navy goalkeeper Elizabeth Hoerner was whistled for a foul in the penalty box. UMBC's Rachel McKee took the ensuing penalty kick and converted to the top right corner to pull within one.

The Retrievers nearly evened the score in the 82nd minute when Alexes Quaranta had a good look on goal from 18 yards out but her shot sailed high and Navy went on to pick up its first win of the season.

Navy outshot UMBC, 27-6, in the game and 17-2 in the decisive first half. The Mids also led in corner kicks, 4-1.

Hoerner made two saves to earn her first career win. UMBC goalkeeper Lauren Kadet made 10 saves.

Navy extends its all-time lead in the series against UMBC to 7-2-1.

The Mids will next host USC Upstate on Friday, August 24th at 7:00 PM.
