EASTON, Pa. - Junior Morgan Dankanich tallied her third game-winning goal of the season in the 75th minute to lead Navy (9-2-0, 2-0-0 Patriot League) past Lafayette (4-4-1, 0-2-0 Patriot League), 1-0, on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Oaks Stadium. With the 1-0 win, the Midshipmen have not allowed a goal in four straight games during the seven-game winning streak.
"We played one of our best defensive games this season," said head coach Carin Gabarra. "Every time Lafayette looked to counterattack, our defense had an answer each time to minimize any offensive opportunity. That was a very good Lafayette team and played toe-to-toe with us for the full 90 minutes."
Dankanich's goal in the 75th minute was her seventh career game-winning goal. Ashlynn Soellner recorded her second assist of the season. Goalkeeper Elizabeth Hoerner tallied her fourth shutout of the season, making one save.
With the game in a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes, Navy looked to capitalize early in the second half to grab an early lead. In the 47th minute, Soellner looked to break the tie but Lafayette goalkeeper Danielle Sedillo denied the attempt.
Seven minutes later, Paloma Perez took her first shot but it went wide of the net. Minutes later Perez took her second shot, this one on net, but Sedillo came up big for the Leopards to preserve the scoreless tie.
Lafayette looked to break the tie with a counter attack in the 69th minute. The Leopard's best offensive opportunity came at the foot of Alyssa Finelli. Finelli had a look just inside the 18-yard box but Hoerner recorded her lone save.
Then in the 75th minute, Navy broke open the game with the game's first goal. Soellner sent her shot at net but bounced off the crossbar. However, Dankanich was in perfect position to receive the rebound and score the eventual game-winner.
Navy and Lafayette played a scoreless first half, with the Mids holding an offensive advantage in shots, 6-1.
The Leopards had two offensive chances early with two corner kicks in the third and seventh minute of the contest. But the Mids' defense held strong by not allowing a shot on either attempt.
Navy looks to go for its eighth straight win with a mid-week contest against American on Oct. 2.
