BEALLSVILLE, Md. - The Navy men's golf team shot the third-lowest score of the day (291, +7) and the fifth lowest of the tournament to place fifth out of 12 teams at the Georgetown Intercollegiate played Monday and Tuesday at The Members Club at Four Streams in Beallsville, Md. The Mids entered the day tied with four other teams for fifth place, but played a strong final round to secure sole possession of fifth in their fall finale.
"I thought we played well on what is a really tough championship course," said Navy head coach Pat Owen. "We have improved in each of our last two tournaments and I think it's a reflection of what has been good team chemistry. Our two seniors, August Jonas and Bryce Keene, have provided great leadership and the younger players have fallen in line. I'm really encouraged with how we have played these last couple of weeks and its great to close out the fall season on a positive note."
Navy opened Monday's tournament riding the momentum of a solid sixth-place finish at last week's Maryland Terrapin Invitational. The Mids shot a 13-over par 297 in the first round of the Georgetown Intercollegiate, settling into fifth and within reach of moving up in the standings. Navy cut six strokes off its opening-round mark to not only secure a fifth-place finish, but finished ahead of Penn State, who is a top 45 program.
Leading the way for the Mids was senior team captain August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.), who finished just outside of the top 10 with an 11th-place 3-over par 145 (72-73). Sophomore Connor Tallman (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and freshman Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.) played an outstanding final 18 holes where both shot par. The pair improved upon their opening-round 5-over par 76 and finished tied for 18th with a 5-over par 147.
Senior Bryce Keene (Bakersfield, Calif.), who fought through the final round with an injured right knee, fell in at 27th with a 7-over par 149 (73-76), while sophomore Devin Terry (La Crosse, Wis.) finished 58th with a 15-over par 157.
Toledo shot the two lowest rounds of the tournament, 284 and 285, to pace the field with a 1-over par 569. Seattle University (293-290=583) beat out a William & Mary team (297-287=584) that shed 10 strokes from its opening-round score to finish second, while Illinois State (293-294=587) held off the Midshipmen for fourth.
Meanwhile, Georgetown freshman Cole Berman defeated William & Mary's Alex Hicks in a one-hole (10th hole) playoff to claim the medalist honors.
