BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The #23 Navy men's soccer team (10-4-3, 5-1-1) battled Lehigh (8-7-1, 3-3-1) to a 1-1 draw at Ulrich Sports Complex on Wednesday evening. Navy extends its unbeaten streak to eight games as the Mids are 6-0-2 over the last month of action.
After winning the Patriot League Tournament in 2013, the Mids have qualified for the six-team postseason tournament once again with its 16 points and two league games remaining. Boston U. (6-0-1) leads the league with 19 points while Navy is second with 16 and American is third with 13.
Lehigh's Gianfranco Giammatteo put Lehigh on the board in the 53rd minute and then Navy's Sam Bascom evened the game at 1-1 just four minutes later. Navy had multiple chances to score again and outshot Lehigh, 16-7, in the decisive second half.
"Lehigh is a good team and they are really tough at home," said head coach Dave Brandt. "We let them go ahead and then we scored a great goal to tie it. We were all over them after that but we didn't get the second goal. We have a resilient group, no doubt, but the next step for us is to put the game away when we have them on the ropes."
Giammatteo's third goal of the season came after he received the ball near the top of the penalty box moving to his right. He then shot back across to the left post past the diving Navy goalkeeper Jackson Morgan.
Just four minutes later, Bascom, a sophomore forward, carried the ball on a long run slicing through the Lehigh defense. He ripped a shot to the upper right corner of the right post for his second goal of the season.
Junior forward Thomas Shiiba had multiple scoring chances, but Lehigh goalkeeper Ciaran Nugent made three saves against him. Lehigh's Jamie Luchini had a few good chances as well, including one shot that hit the post in the first half.
Nugent made nine saves for Lehigh while Morgan made three saves for the Mids. Navy held the overall edge in shots, 25-19, while Lehigh had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior defender Joseph Greenspan became Navy's all-time leader in games played with his 75th on Wednesday. Greenspan broke a tie with 2014 graduate Dave Arnold.
Greenspan played every minute of the contest on Wednesday for the 14th straight game and for the 16th time in 17 games this season. Greenspan has not missed a game in his four-year playing career. The 6-foot-6, 209-pound center back was a 2013 NSCAA All-American and he is on the 2014 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.
Navy will next play at Loyola on Saturday at 7:00 PM and then will close the Patriot League Regular Season by facing Army at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. on November 7.
