Rifle Finishes Third at President's Trophy Match

Nov. 1, 2014

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Navy rifle team completed competition at the 2014 President's Trophy Match on Saturday with a third-place finish. Shooting in a five-scorer format, the Mids recorded a 5761-point total to finish one point shy of second place Army and 32 points shy of the event winner, Air Force. The host Coast Guard Academy finished fourth with a final total of 5512.

Jodi Cull-Host (Jr., Los Alamos, N.M.) was Navy's highlight performer on Saturday as she recorded 1162 aggregate points on a 576-point effort in smallbore and a 586 in air rifle.

"We were close, but not close enough if you ask me," said head coach Bill Kelley after the match. "We showed small improvements, but it wasn't enough. If we could've turned around a few shots we would've been right in it. I'm kind of disappointed with today's outcome."

In the smallbore portion of the event, the Mids scored 2855 points on the strength of a team-high score of 578 by Dan Jonas (So., Allentown, N.J.). He was followed in the five-scorer lineup by Cull-Host's 576 and Zach Gibson's (Jr., Montrose, Colo.) 572. The senior pairing Brandon Thompson (Shelbyville, Ky.) and Alex Berry (Greensboro, N.C.) rounded out the group with results of 566 and 563.

Navy followed up its performance in smallbore with a 2906-point effort in air rifle. Cull-Host led the quintet of Midshipmen scorers with her score of 586. Berry and Jonas were close behind with 584 and 581-point outputs, respectively. The final two counters for Navy in air rifle were Gibson and Thomas Sarant (Fr., Massapequa, N.Y.), who recorded totals of 578 and 577.

For NCAA recording purposes, the Mids finished with a four-counter result of 4621 points on a 2292-point score in smallbore and a 2329-point total in air rifle. When the NCAA scores are compared across the board Navy ranked second overall as Air Force registered a 4650, Army a 4613 and Coast Guard a 4448.

Navy will be in action next Saturday with a shoulder-to-shoulder match against North Carolina State. The Mids and Wolfpack will do battle at a neutral site in Charleston, S.C. beginning at 8 a.m.
