PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence's LaDontae Hinton scored 22 points and Kris Dunn had 12 points, 14 assists and seven rebounds as the Friars (3-0) posted an 88-51 win over visiting Navy (0-3) on Thursday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in a campus round game of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament.

In addition to Hinton and Dunn, the Friars had four players in double figures with Ben Bentil scoring 18 points off the bench and Taylor Harris adding 11.

"We had a hard time scoring against their length and their athleticism," head coach Ed DeChellis said. "We played a little better in the second half offensively, but defensively we were not really good. We just traded baskets with them and that's not what we're trying to do. We are trying to stop the other team."

Navy opened the game by scoring the first bucket on a Brandon Venturini 3-pointer, but the Friars responded with a 13-0 run over the next five minutes until an Edward Alade free throw stopped the spurt. The Friars then continued to open up their lead and took a 40-20 advantage into halftime.

The Mids came out strong in the second half and hit six of their first eight shots for 12 points in the first 6:17. Sophomore James Hemphill scored six points during the stretch, while Alade added four and sophomore Grant Vermeer scored on a layup.

Providence then reeled off a 19-2 run to extend its lead to 72-34 with eight minutes left in the game. The Friars got seven points from Hinton during the stretch and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers.

Navy continued to fight and closed the game on a 13-6 run for the final score of 88-51. Hemphill added four more points in the final 45 seconds, while freshman Bryce Dulin added five, freshman Daniel Noe hit a 3-pointer and senior Kevin Alter made a free throw.

Hemphill finished with a career-high 10 points and two rebounds. Alade added nine points, five boards and two assists and freshman Shawn Anderson scored six.

Venturini moved into sole possession of sixth place in school history with his 149th career 3-pointer, but fouled out after playing just 13 minutes. Navy also played its second straight game without senior forward Worth Smith.

Providence shot 55 percent from the floor and was 11-of-21 on 3-pointers. The Friars had nine steals and blocked seven shots. Navy shot just 39 percent from the floor and 24 percent on 3-pointers.

"We have to execute our offense better and we have to guard better," said DeChellis. "We need to find our way in a hurry because we have more games coming up and we have got to play better."

Navy will next play Northeastern (2-0) at the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday at 8:00 PM in Uncasville, Conn. on ESPN3. The Huskies were picked to win the Colonial Athletic Association this season and are coming off a win over Florida State on Tuesday.
