ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A 15-0 run that started in the early moments of the game set the tone for what would end up being a 71-35 victory by the Navy women's basketball team over Saint Peter's Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall in Annapolis.
The Peacocks (0-9) scored the opening points of the game on a layup by Samantha Meier 100 seconds into the contest. The Mids (6-5), who were 0-3 from the field to that point, recorded points on six of their next eight possessions to build a 15-2 advantage. Peri Curtis (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) started the successful run with a layup of her own, then Danielle Poblarp (So., Topeka, Kan.) and Curtis drained three-point field goals on the ensuing two possessions for the Mids. Navy came away empty on its next trip down the court, but another Poblarp triple on the following one boosted the Mids out to an 11-2 lead. Hannah Fenske (Fr., Albuquerque, N.M.) made a pair of free throws the next time the Mids had the ball, then a missed shot by Navy was followed by a Curtis jumper to close out the span.
Navy made 5 of 9 shots from the floor during the run that took up just over four minutes of clock time.
Navy's lead grew to 14 points at 18-4 before Saint Peter's cut the margin down to eight at 18-10 with 8:35 remaining on the clock. The Mids promptly scored the next 11 points -- six of which were tallied by Sarita Condie (So., Lovelock, Nev.) -- as part of a half-closing 21-6 run that boosted Navy out to a 39-16 advantage at the break.
The Mids were 5 of 10 from three-point range in the first half as part of their overall shooting effort of 48.3 percent for the frame. Conversely, Navy held Saint Peter's to 33.3 percent shooting and a 1 of 7 showing from three-point range while also forcing the Peacocks into 15 turnovers and committing just six turnovers of its own.
"I was really happy," said Navy head coach Stefanie Pemper. "I thought we were really focused. We didn't look very rusty. I told them (before the game) to expect that we may not be as sharp on offense but we could control our defense and our hustle. But I thought we were pretty sharp on offense. We shot the ball pretty well, so I am pleased."
Navy's lead never dipped below 22 points over the remainder of the game.
The Mids sank 11 three-point field goals in the game and limited the Peacocks to just 14 made field goals of any kind. Navy shot 41.3 percent from the field -- 40.7 percent from behind the arc -- and held Saint Peter's to just 31.8 percent shooting. The Mids also held advantages over the Peacocks in rebounds (37-32), turnovers forced (26-11), points off turnovers (30-4) and steals (16-5).
"Alison Montgomery, one of our assistant coaches, did a good job scouting them," said Pemper. "We felt we could get into the passing lanes and go for some steals, and that was effective tonight."
Condie set career highs on the afternoon in both points and rebounds with 14 and six, respectively, to lead the Mids in both categories while also adding three assists and two steals in just 16 minutes of playing time. Her assist tally was a season high and fell one short of tying her career-best effort, while her steal total tied a career high.
"We had about two weeks off since our last game," said Condie. "A lot of times with finals and the holidays coming up, practices this time of year aren't great, but everyone has been really focused the last two weeks and we made each other better so we could be prepared for this game."
Curtis and Poblarp joined Condie in double figures as the former totaled 12 points and the latter accrued 11. Additionally, Marina Muenster (Fr., Coppell, Texas) scored a career-high nine points while Taylor Dunham (Fr., Fort Belvoir, Va.) contributed eight points.
Sunday's game closed out the non-Patriot League portion of Navy's season. The Mids will next take to the court New Year's Eve day at 2 p.m. when they play at Loyola.
