FARMVILLE, Va. - A 6-0 run in the second half by the Navy women's lacrosse team secured a win over Longwood, 14-8, on Saturday at Athletics Complex. Junior attack Loren Generi (Bayport, N.Y) had a game-high six points on four goals and two assists.
"We were pleased to come away with a road victory to begin the season," said head coach Cindy Timchal. "I was happy to see the players respond in the second half with the adjustments we made to create some big defensive stops down the stretch."
Navy tied the program record for most caused turnovers in a game with 17 (also 17 vs. Holy Cross; 3/27/10), 11 of which came in the second half. Generi, who is known for her offensive output, had a career-high and game-best three caused turnovers. The Mids stifled the Lancers in the second half, holding the opponent's offense to just one total shot.
With the score knotted 8-8 heading into the second half, Navy (1-0) wasted very little time regaining the lead. Generi won the opening draw to set the Mids up with an offensive opportunity. Following a foul from a Lancer defender, midfielder Casey Browne (Jr., Miller Place, N.Y.) netted in her third goal of the contest (career-high) to give Navy a one-goal lead, 9-8, with just a minute off the clock in the second half.
Both teams picked up the defensive intensity for the next 13 minutes, causing a combined eight turnovers (Navy - 5, Longwood - 3) and allowing two total shots (Longwood - 1, Navy - 1).
Navy went back on the attacking end, rattling off four goals in a nine-minute and 34-second stretch to extend its lead to five, 13-8, with 7:19 remaining in the contest. Navy midfielder Aislinn Probst (Fr., Arnold, Md.) sparked the four-goal run by tallying her first collegiate assist to teammate Aimee Gennaro (Sr., Havertown, Pa.). Generi followed up with a goal at the 12:40 mark and an assist to Jill Coughlin (Sr. Annapolis, Md.) with 7:19 left. Miranda Beal (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) converted on a free-position shot between Generi's goal and assist for her second goal of the contest at the 9:09 mark.
Generi scored her fourth and final goal with 3:18 left to improve Navy to 6-1 all-time in season openers. The win extends the Mids streak of consecutive road wins to seven games (2/16/13 to present).
Longwood held a two-goal lead four different times in the first half, led by attacker Sarah Butler's three first-half goals. As Longwood held its largest lead of two, 8-6, with 1:32 left in the first half, Generi and Browne scored within 45 seconds of one another to wipe away the deficit and go into the second half even.
Navy goalkeeper Annie Foky (1-0) recorded two saves, including a big free-position opportunity save early in the first half. Longwood netminder Christian Acker (0-1) tallied nine saves on 23 chances.
Navy welcomes Campbell on Friday, Feb. 14 in its home opener at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The game is set for 4 p.m.
