Women's Tennis Drops Providence, 6-1

March 23, 2014

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's tennis team (15-6) earned a 6-1 win over visiting Providence (4-9) on Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex. Navy has now won at least 15 matches in four straight seasons.

"We started off pretty well in doubles but Providence did a good job of fighting back and keeping it close," head coach Keith Puryear said. "Once we secured the doubles point, I liked the way we came out in singles. We won the first set on every court but number six and we did a good job of maintaining focus throughout the match."

Navy swept the doubles point, winning at 8-6 on each court. Senior Erin Snook and sophomore Katie Porter defeated Maria Bernardez and Olivia Hogan at No. 1 doubles and sophomore Cassandra Fisbeck and freshman Rozel Hernandez bested Alana Prinos and Hannah Zangari at No. 2 doubles. Navy sophomore Mikaela Carlson and junior Gabby Winter also earned the 8-6 win over Jennifer DeLuca and Amanda Pitocco at No. 3 doubles.

Winter won the first singles match of the day at No. 3 over DeLuca, 6-0, 6-2 and Carlson followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Zangari at No. 4. Sophomore Sam Droop clinched Navy's team win at No. 2 singles over Prinos, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.

Freshman Audrey Channell went on to win at No. 5 over Hogan, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 and Snook posted a 6-4, 7-5 win over Bernardez at No. 1 singles.

Navy is now 2-0 all-time against Providence.

Navy will begin Patriot League play next weekend. The Mids will play at Colgate on Saturday and then at Bucknell on Sunday.
