Lightweight Rowing Falls to Yale in Johnson Cup Competition

March 29, 2014

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Navy lightweight rowing team raced in its first spring competition on Saturday versus Yale at Lake Carnegie. The Mids and Bulldogs participated in four races with the culmination being the Varsity 8 event for the Eads Johnson Trophy. Navy won one race, though Yale came away with the Johnson Cup on a windy and rainy day of action.

"The coaching staff was proud of the effort and determination that our crews demonstrated today," said Navy head coach Shawn Bagnall. "In a challenging headwind all afternoon, they were able to find out where they stacked up against one of the best teams in our league. We look forward to getting back to work on Monday."

In the headlining V8 race, the Mids and Bulldogs fought throughout as Yale pulled away late for a 4.5-second victory, 6:19.9 to 6:24.4.

Yale took two more victories over Navy in the JV8 and Novice 8 races. In both events, the action was close with the Bulldogs holding off the Mids in the JV8 by 3.3 seconds (6:25.2-6:28.5) and in the Novice 8 by 2.0 seconds (6:42.5-6:44.5).

In a mixed third varsity/second freshman race, Navy came out on top with a 6:47.8 result. The Mids' fourth V8 crew finished second with a time of 6:55.1. Both Navy squads defeated Yale's boat by over 10 seconds.

The team will be back in action next Saturday, April 5 in a tri-meet in Overpeck Park, N.J. versus Columbia and Princeton.
