Women's Tennis Edges Bucknell, 4-3

March 30, 2014

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Navy women's tennis team won a third straight match on Sunday by defeating Bucknell (3-5, 1-1 PL), 4-3. Navy (17-6) has now opened Patriot League play with a perfect 2-0 record.

Navy went 2-1 in doubles play to take the very important doubles point. After falling at No. 2 doubles, 8-1, sophomores Noelle Kaufmann and Mikaela Carlson earned an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles over Elena Vidrascu and Maria Cioffi to even the score.

Senior Darien Sears and sophomore Sam Droop then clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win at No. 3 over Stephanie Pino and Alyssa McAndrew.

Navy then improved to 2-0 when senior Erin Snook downed Vidrascu in straight sets at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Sears fell at No. 2 singles, but Navy picked up another win at No. 3 singles where Droop defeated Lydia Colvin, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.

Junior Gabby Winter then clinched the team win at No. 4 singles with a three-set battle with Michelle Urbinati. Winter won the first set in a tiebreak at 7-6 (7-1) before Urbinati evened the match with a tiebreak win at 7-6 (8-6) in the second. Winter then had a strong third set, closing out Urbinati, 6-1, to give Navy its 17th dual win of the season.

Both matchups at No. 5 and No. 6 singles were tied after the first two sets, and with Navy having already secured the team win, the third sets were played to a 10-point tiebreak instead of a set to six games. Bucknell won both matches to cut the final score to 4-3.

Navy will next host Army on Saturday at 10:00 AM at the Brigade Sports Complex. The contest will be the first Army-Navy Women's Tennis Star Match to be played in Annapolis. Navy will also host Lafayette on Sunday at 2:30 PM.
