RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J. - The Navy lightweight rowing team participated in a tri-meet on Saturday at Overpeck County Park in Ridgefield Park, N.J. versus Princeton and Columbia. The No. 4 Mids fell to the No. 2 Tigers and No. 7 Lions in the varsity eight competition for the Murtaugh and WIT Cups. Entered in four races, Navy won its final race, the fourth varsity event.
"The team made strides this week in the elements of racing that we had placed some specific focus on, which was great to see. Unfortunately, the overall result wasn't the one that we were working toward this week," said Navy head coach Shawn Bagnall. "Our hats off to both Columbia and Princeton as they raced well and handled some very challenging conditions."
In the varsity eight with the Murtaugh and WIT Cups up for grabs, Columbia and Princeton battled to a tight 6:03.2 to 6:03.3 result. Navy finished off the pace with a time of 6:13.4. The Murtaugh Cup headed home with Princeton, while Columbia took possession of the WIT (Whatever It Takes) Cup.
The Tigers swept the 2V8 and third varsity races with times of 6:15.0 and 6:29.1, respectively. Navy's crews finished in third in both events with 6:28.0 and 6:41.4 results.
In the final competition of the day, the Mids cruised to a 7.6-second victory in the fourth varsity race, 6:45.3-to-6:52.9 over Princeton. Columbia's fourth varsity team rounded out the field with a 7:51.7 time.
"We look forward to continuing to put down the racing foundation needed, as well as prepare to host a strong Georgetown squad next Saturday," said Bagnall.
Navy will be back in action next Saturday, April 12 in a home meet versus Georgetown on the Severn River.
