ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The No. 22 Navy men's soccer team (3-2-1) fell to George Washington (3-1-0), 2-1, in double overtime on Tuesday evening at the
Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The Colonials scored the game-wining goal in the 107th minute.
Six minutes into the sudden-death overtime period, Navy was whistled for a controversial call about 20 yards in front of its own goal. George Washington's Andri Alexandersson drilled the free kick off the top of the cross bar and the shot bounced down and into the goal.
George Washington also scored the game's first goal in the 40th minute, just before halftime. Philip McQuitty got to the left endline and fired a cross into the box. Navy goalkeeper Mac Burke tried to control it but couldn't cover it. Garrett Heine then ran in to tap it into the corner from four yards out.
Navy evened the game at 1-1 just 1:57 into the second half. Junior Michael Parker passed to senior Joseph Greenspan, who sent junior Thomas Shiiba on a run through George Washington's backline. Shiiba took control of the ball and drilled a shot high to the far side of the goal for his second of the season.
Navy had a number of opportunities to get a second goal, with one being in the 54th minute when junior Jamie Dubyoski's shot was initially saved by GW goalkeeper Jean-Pierre van der Merwe and the rebound trickled to the inside of the far post, but that bounced back into play.
Junior Derek Vogel found the back of the net in the 77th minute but the goal was waved off for a Navy player being offside.
van der Merwe made seven saves to earn the win. Burke had two saves and took his first loss of his collegiate career.
Navy outshot George Washington, 19-9, and held an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Navy also had eight corner kicks, while the Colonials had only one.
"I didn't think we were sharp tonight," head coach Dave Brandt said. "It feels like we've had quite the run of games and maybe some fatigue is setting in. I'm not sure we deserved to lose this game, but we'll need to get better to win more games."
Navy will look to get back on the winning track at NJIT on Saturday at 5:00 PM.
