BRONX, N.Y. - Navy men's cross country team began the 2014 season with a dominating team performance at the Fordham Fiasco, finishing first out of eight teams Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park. Junior Steve Schroeder (Monticello, Ill.) led the field with a first-place finish of 26:17.25.
Navy ran a perfectly packed meet with all 12 runners finishing in the top-14 places. The Mids finished first with a team score of 15 points. Fordham placed second with 69 and Fairfield rounded out the top three with 74 points. Manhattan (112), Rutgers (142), St. Francis (171), Fairleigh Dickinson (193) and St. Peter's (224) completed the field of eight.
"This was the first meet of the season and despite the unforgiving heat, we stayed as a group throughout the entire race," Navy head coach Al Cantello. "Times for today did not matter as long as we were able to keep up a well-packed group and we did."
After Schroeder, Zach Hebda (26:17.50), John Sweeney (26:17.78), Sam Peckham (26:18.15), Hal Bullen (26:22.75) and Lucas Stalnaker (26:27.28) finished second through sixth, in that order, all within 10 seconds of each other. Mitchell Pratt rounded out the group of seven scoring runners in eighth place with a time of 26:53.75.
Navy will host the annual Navy Invitational next Saturday at the USNA Cross Country Course.
