No. 11 Rifle Falls Versus No. 3 TCU on Saturday

Jan. 31, 2015

LINCOLN, Neb. - The Navy rifle team recorded its fourth highest team score of the season on Saturday, but it wasn't enough as the 11th-ranked Mids were unable to upset the third-ranked Horned Frogs of TCU. Shooting at Nebraska's NU Rifle Range, TCU defeated Navy by a score of 4,678 to 4,636.

"We had a pretty good performance today," said head coach Bill Kelley. "I'm proud of the effort as it was long day at the range as we had to shoot over two relays. We had some real solid numbers, but not anything earth shattering. TCU is the number three team in the nation and we held our own against them. I saw the hard work that the team puts in during practice translate at the line today. We had a few scuffles here and there, but we didn't get down. Instead, we sorted it out and got back to producing solid scores."

The duo of Zach Gibson (Jr., Montrose, Colo.) and Alex Berry (Sr., Greensboro, N.C.) led the Mids on Saturday as Gibson was the squad's high aggregate scorer, while Berry shot a career-high to lead the team in air rifle. Gibson's 1,162 aggregate score began with a team-high 578 in smallbore before coming back in air rifle and recording a 584. Behind two perfect frames of 100 and two more of 99, Berry finished her air rifle performance with 589 points.

In smallbore action, Gibson's 578 was followed closely by Dan Jonas' (So., Allentown, N.J.) 576. The final two counters for Navy on Saturday were Berry with 570 points and Jodi Cull-Host (Jr., Los Alamos, N.M.), who notched a 569 score. The Mids score in smallbore was a 2,293.

Navy nearly went point-for-point with TCU in the air rifle competition as the Mids shot a 2,343, just eight shy of the Horned Frogs' 2,351. Berry's 589 led the way for Navy as all four counters finished within five points of each other. Thomas Sarant (Fr., Massapequa, N.Y.) shot a career-high 586 to rank second on the team, while Cull-Host and Gibson rounded out the lineup with identical scores of 584.

"Today was a good start to the weekend and we're looking forward to getting back to the range tomorrow," remarked Kelley.

Navy will have a quick turnaround as it gets right back into action on Sunday morning with a 9:00 am competition against No. 7 Nebraska.
