Final Stats

JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Ashanti Kennedy (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) keyed a strong third quarter by the Navy women's basketball team that allowed the Mids to rally for a 50-39 victory over Saint Peter's, Sunday afternoon at the Yanitelli Center in Jersey City, N.J.

The Mids (1-1) trailed the Peacoks (0-2), 20-11, at the end of the first quarter but drew to within three of the home team, 24-21, at halftime. Kennedy scored seven of Navy's 20 points in a third quarter that finished with the Mids in front, 41-35. The Mids would then outscore the Peacocks, 9-4, in the final period to come away with the victory.

After giving up those 20 first-period points, the Navy defense allowed just 19 points over the remaining three quarters and 30 minutes of the game. Conversely, the Mids scored 39 points over the final three periods after being held to 11 in the opening 10 minutes.

"It was great the way we responded well to a cold shooting first quarter," said Navy head coach Stefanie Pemper. "I thought changing defenses got us back into the game. We gave up 20 points in the first quarter, which is unusual for us. Our players got some confidence from our zones and it was neat to see that."

Kennedy posted 14 points in all to lead Navy in scoring. Today's effort, which left her one point shy of tying her career high, came after she notched 12 points and 10 caroms in a 65-63 loss at Hofstra Friday night.

Sarita Condie (Jr., Lovelock, Nev.) added nine points to the Navy scoring total while Bianca Roach (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.) chipped in seven points.

"We really received great contributions from a lot of people today," said Pemper. "Saint Peter's paid a lot of attention to Sarita and we truly needed others to step up and make plays and they did."

Due to statistical issues prior to and during the game, neither a complete box score nor an official play-by-play of the game are currently available from Saint Peter's.

Navy will open its home slate on Nov. 22 when the Mids play host to North Carolina A&T.
