Nov. 28, 2015 Final Stats
ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€"â€" Sarita Condie (Jr., Lovelock, Nev.) made two free throws with 1.1 seconds left in regulation to cap a rally by the Navy women's basketball team from an 11-point, fourth quarter deficit to send its game against Colorado State into a first overtime, but the Rams would eventually prevail over the Mids, 82-73 in two overtimes, Saturday evening at Alumni Hall in Annapolis.
The game was Navy's second overtime contest in 48 hours (the Mids defeated Siena, 59-58, on Friday) and was a school-record third-straight overtime contest for the Mids (Navy defeated Elon, 73-70 in double overtime, Tuesday night). Additionally, the win gives Colorado State, winners of the Mountain West Conference in 2015 and the pre-season favorite to win the conference again this season, the Navy Classic title.
"Really tough," said Navy head coach Stefanie Pemper of the loss. "Just really proud of our players for continuing to compete and hitting big shots. We felt Colorado State was the most talented team on our schedule. Am just proud of going to double overtime against them, but it is hard to lose that one. We had our chances to win it."
Navy (4-2) trailed Colorado State (5-1) by 11 points with 8:32 remaining in the fourth quarter and the Mids were still down by eight points at 62-54 with 55.5 seconds left on the clock. Condie made a free throw four seconds later (62-55), then a steal by Justice Swett (Jr., Nashville, Tenn.) led to her being fouled and going to the line with 32.9 seconds remaining. After making the first attempt (62-56), she missed the second, but teammate Ashanti Kennedy (So., Virginia Beach, Va.) was there for the rebound and scored on the putback with 28.8 seconds left to make the score 62-58.
The Mids quickly fouled Jamie Patrick with 18.3 seconds left, but she made just one of her two efforts at the foul line (63-58). That five-point margin was quickly sliced down to two when Taylor Dunham (So., Fort Belvoir, Va.) drained a three-point shot with 18.3 seconds remaining to close the Mids to within 63-61. After first inbounding the ball against the Navy pressure defense, the Rams called timeout with both 16.0 and 12.2 seconds left. Colorado State tried to take time off the clock, but Hannah Tvrdy barely crossed halfcourt before being forced into the corner by a pair of Mids. Without a timeout left to call, she fell to the ground as Dunham swiped up the ball from her with roughly five seconds still to play. Navy hurriedly advanced the ball into Condie's hands and she was fouled near the free throw stripe while attempting a shot with the aforementioned 1.1 seconds showing on the clock. After going 1-2 from the foul line 50 seconds earlier, she calmly sank both attempts this time.
"We weren't making free throws," said Pemper of the fourth quarter defense by the Mids, "so I wasn't excited about fouling and putting them (Colorado State) on the foul line and watching them score and extend the lead. We were getting to the line, but were not hitting, so I just wanted to try and create something (with our defense). I think they were expecting us to foul, so that may have created a little discomfort for them. And it must have because before we knew it we were going to overtime again."
Defense dominated the first extra session as Navy was 1-6 from the floor and 2-2 from the foul line while Colorado State was 2-5 from the field. With both teams scoring just those four points, the game was extended into a second overtime period. The Rams opened the new frame with a 7-1 run to take a 75-68 lead with 2:17 left to play. After Kennedy grabbed an offensive board that was generated by a Condie missed three-point attempt on Navy's ensuing possession, Dunham received the kickout pass and drilled her sixth three-point field goal of the night to make the score 75-71 with 1:48 showing on the clock.
Each team came away empty on their next respective possession, then a Colorado State missed shot was followed by Ellen Nystrom picking off a pass from Condie and scoring on a layup to put the Rams ahead, 77-71, with 43 seconds left. Dunham hit another jumper with 33.4 seconds remaining to again cut the margin down to four points, but Nystrom was fouled while scoring on a layup with 21.5 seconds remaining to play. Her converted free throw attempt gave the visitors an 80-73 advantage.
Navy held the lead for the majority of the first half of the game and had at one point built a 22-12 lead late in the first quarter. Colorado State went on a run of its own to take a 23-22 lead early in the second quarter, but the Mids entered halftime holding a 32-29 advantage. The lead remained in Navy's hands at the start of the third quarter until a 10-0 run by the Rams gave them a 45-39 lead. Colorado State would stretch its lead to 50-42 at the end of the third stanza on its way to building the 54-43 lead with 6:57 remaining in regulation.
Despite there being a noticeable height difference between the teams, the smaller Mids tied the taller Rams in rebounds, 40-40, and even held a 12-8 advantage in offensive boards.
Navy struggled from the foul line for the second night in a row. After entering the Navy Classic shooting 72.1 percent from the free throw line on the season, the Mids were just 10-22 (45.5%) from the foul line Friday against the Saints and ended tonight's game sinking just 13-24 attempts (54.2%). Conversely, the Rams were 12-16 (75%) from the free throw line this evening.
Colorado State improved its shooting throughout the game. The Rams made 42.3 percent of their shots in the first half, 44.8 percent of their attempts in the second half and were 7-11 (63.6%) from the field over the course of the two overtime periods. At the other basket, Navy made 46.4 percent of its shots in the first 20 minutes of the game, 41.7 percent of its attempts in the second 20 minutes and was 3-12 (25%) from the floor in the 10 minutes of overtime.
Dunham made 6-9 three-point attempts to tally a career-high 28 points in the game, while Condie totaled 18 points, five rebounds and three assists in 44 minutes of playing time. With her effort this evening on the heels of a 15-point, five-rebound, five-assist night against the Saints, Condie was named to the Navy Classic All-Tournament Team. Additionally for the Mids, Kennedy totaled 13 points and six rebounds, with Peri Curtis (Sr., Coronado, Calif.) tallying eight points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Five Colorado State players scored in double figures. Nystrom's 17 boards â€"â€" and six assists â€"â€" led the Rams.
Navy will be back home Wednesday night when it plays host to LIU Brooklyn.
