BOSTON, Mass. - Bucknell's Alexis Gannon's two-goal effort led second-seeded Bucknell past the third-seeded Navy women's soccer team, 3-0, in the Patriot League Semifinals Friday night at Nickerson Field. Navy finished the season with an 11-7-4 mark.
"Give credit to Bucknell for coming out and being the better team," Navy head coach Carin Gabarra said. "It is a tough way to end a season, especially for our seniors to go out like that despite having a good year."
Bucknell (11-5-3) tallied two goals in the first half to build a 2-0 lead. First team all-league forward Kendall Ham got the Bison on the scoreboard first in the 21st minute as she dribbled past two defenders and beat Navy goalkeeper Dayton Wetherby (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) to the near post. Bucknell then found itself on the attacking end in the 44th minute as Jackie Ham played a through ball from midfield to teammate Gannon. Gannon took two touches from the top of the 18-yard box and sent her shot over a stretched-out Wetherby to extend the Bison's lead to two, 2-0.
With a two-goal deficit halfway through the second half, Navy junior Rachel Feldman (Danville, Calif.) looked to bring the Mids back into the match. Feldman found herself alone at the top of the 18-yard box and struck a well-hit ball to the far post, but bounced off the post and back into play in the 68th minute. Two minutes later, Navy was award a free kick 25 yards out with Feldman to take the honors. Feldman, again, hit a hard shot to the far post, but second team all-league goalkeeper Jessica Ratner made a tough save to preserve the 2-0 lead.
As time was winding down, Bucknell's Gannon snuck a ball underneath a charging Wetherby and finished the play to grab Bucknell's third and final goal in the 89th minute to advance the Bison to the Patriot League Championship match.
Bucknell held advantages over Navy in shots, 15-11, shots on goal, 8-5 while the Mids edged the Bison in corner kicks, 4-0. Wetherby finished the match with five saves on eight chances.
Sophomore forward Clare MacAdam (Palmyra, N.J.) and freshman Ash Fairow (Jacksonville, N.C.) were named to the Patriot League All-Tournament team. Fairow and MacAdam combined for three of Navy's six goals in the league tournament.
