FAIRFAX, Va. - The Navy women's track and field mid-distance runners led the Mids to a first-place finish at the 2015 Patriot Games, hosted by George Mason, on Saturday. Navy recorded eight top two finishes and one ECAC qualifying performance.
Navy topped the field with 184.50 team points followed by George Mason with 144.50 points. James Madison (100), Temple (96) and Howard (64.50) rounded out the top five. Mount St. Mary's (36.50), UMBC (28), George Washington (21), VCU (21), La Salle (14), Coppin State (5) and American (4) completed the field.
"Our mid distance runners, jumpers and throwers looked great today," Navy head coach Carla Criste said. "Hopefully we are starting to peak at the right time as we head into the championship portion of the season, including our Army-Navy dual meet next Saturday."
Navy's mid-distance events of the 800m and 1000m run saw great results as the Mids had two runners finish in the top two in both races. In the 800, senior Shannon Cuthbert (Orange Park, Fla.) and junior Ashley Welker (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) grabbed the top two spots with times of 2:20.14 and 2:21.60, respectively. Juniors Meghan Harvey (Nottingham, Pa.) and Amanda Mulkey (Fallbrook, Calif.) finished first and second in the 1000m run, crossing the tape within 0.57 seconds of one another at 2:58.45 and 2:59.02.
Senior Emily Jensen grabbed second place in the 5000m run with a time of 18:26.51. Junior Kelley Robinson (Nederland, Colo.) and senior Christina Blair (Peninsula, Ohio) finished second and fourth, respectively, in the mile with times of 5:03.20 and 5:08.21.
In the field, junior Angie Cleveland (Gaithersburg, Md.) led the Mids with the team's lone ECAC-qualifying performance in the weight throw. Cleveland recorded a third-place throw of 47ft-5.75in (14.47m).
Freshman Ashanti Curry finished second in the shot put with throw of 42ft-5.5in (12.94m). In the pole vault, Amanda Graham and Charlene Kearns finished third and fourth at 11ft-7.75in (3.55m) and 11ft-1.75in (3.40m), respectively.
