Fong Named NAAA Athlete of the Week

Feb. 10, 2015

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Sophomore guard Zach Fong scored a career-high 24 points to help Navy defeat Army in the Star Game, 67-59, on Saturday and he has been named the NAAA Athlete of the Week, presented by Rolls-Royce, for the week ending Feb. 8.

Fong made his first two starts of his career while filling in for injured starter Brandon Venturini this week. In his first career start at Boston U. on Wednesday, Fong scored a team-high 15 points on five 3-pointers in a narrow 62-59 loss.

Fong poured in 24 points in Navy's win over Army on Saturday, including 18 in the first half. Fong was 9-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-9 on 3-pointers against the Black Knights. His nine field goals made were a career high, as were his 37 minutes played.

Fong is averaging 19.5 points as a starter this season and in the last five games, he has shot .583 on 3-pointers (14-of-24).

"My teammates and my coaches have been confident in me in practice every day," said Fong after the Army game. "I was just trying to step up with BV being out. Brandon has always pushed me in practices so I was just motivated to go out and do it for him. I was confident after seeing the first one fall and I just kept shooting."
