LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Navy women's lacrosse team spread around the wealth on offense as the Mids saw nine different players score at least one goal in the 21-6 win over Liberty Friday afternoon at Liberty Lacrosse Field. It is the second-straight game in which Navy had at least eight different goal scorers.
"It was a total team effort out there and I was impressed with the intensity that we showed for the entire 60 minutes," Navy head coach Cindy Timchal said. "Our rhythm on offense and pressure on defense are at good levels right not but we are in no way satisfied as we have a tall task ahead of us with Duke on Sunday."
Senior attack Loren Generi (Bayport, N.Y.) continued her strong start to the 2015 season, tallying game highs in points (5), goals (4) and draw controls (10). Along with Generi, junior attack Katie Gallagher (Bel Air, Md.) and sophomore attacks Codi Mullen (Wading River, N.Y.) and Morgan Young (Baltimore) all contributed with natural hat tricks.
Navy (2-0) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first 10:44 of the half. Gallagher led the charge with the final two goals of the scoring run.
Liberty (0-2) responded with back-to-back goals within 45 seconds of one another to cut Navy's deficit to two, 4-2, with 16:49 left in the half. Nina Dunay sparked the run with a goal and an assist.
Navy bounced back with two goals of its own, beginning with a breakaway goal from Young and ended with Generi beating her own defender to bring the lead back up to four, 6-2, with 13:14 remaining in the half.
Liberty's Dunay refused to allow Navy to build on its lead as she tallied her second goal of the half with 9:13 left to play to keep the Lady Flames within three, 6-3.
Following Dunay's goal, Navy put the game away, scoring 14 straight goals in span of 30:45 to extend its lead to 17, 20-3, with 7:02 remaining in the contest. Nine different Mids tallied a goal during the stretch, including freshman Arden Smith (Arnold, Md.) capping off the run with her first collegiate goal.
On the defensive side of the ball, Navy continued to flex its muscles early in the season, causing 11 turnovers and holding Liberty to six goals on 16 shots. Generi and senior defender Sarah George (Lutherville, Md.) each recorded two caused turnovers.
Senior Annie Foky (Charlottesville, Va.) remained strong in the net for the second consecutive game, saving five shots on eight attempts in 45:30 minutes of play. Freshman Ingrid Boyum (Herndon, Va.) relieved Foky for the final 15:30, with the game in hand, and recorded one save on four chances.
Navy will look to extend its two-game winning streak on Sunday against No. 8 Duke at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, North Carolina. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m. and can be seen live for $9.95 on the Blue Devil Network.
