Palmas del Mar, Puerto Rico - The Navy women's tennis team (12-6) opened its Puerto Rico spring break trip with a 4-1 win over Division II Augustana College (S.D.) (11-2) on Monday afternoon. Due to a rain delay and then darkness, only five singles matches were finished and the doubles matches were not played to completion.
Navy won its fourth straight match, while Augustana saw its 10-match winning streak come to a close.
"It was a real up-and-down day," said head coach Keith Puryear. "We started then we had to stop and then we couldn't get all the matches finished due to darkness. In some matches we started off well, but didn't do a great job maintaining. But I liked the way we adjusted in our first outdoor match of the spring. Augustana is a good program and they were definitely looking to beat us. They were determined but we were equally determined today and I was happy with our performance."
Due to the rain delay, not all the doubles matches were completed and no doubles point was awarded. In the lone doubles match that was finished, Navy freshmen Amanda Keller and Kristine Rojo defeated Heather Sullivan and Christine Olivo 8-4 at the No. 2 position.
Navy opened its lead by winning three singles matches at the top of its ladder in straight sets. Sophomore Allie Pavlansky then clinched the match at 4-0 with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 win over Jenna Helleberg at No. 5 singles.
Navy junior Sam Droop picked up a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 1 singles over Jessa Richards. Freshman Claudia Mackenzie defeated Sydney Postal at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-3 and sophomore Summer Ralston beat Olivo at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
Ralston extended her winning streak to nine straight matches, which is tied for the third-longest streak in school history.
Navy lost at the No. 4 singles position and the No. 6 singles match was called due to darkness.
Navy will remain in Puerto Rico on its spring break trip and will next face Rhode Island and Sioux Falls in a doubleheader on Thursday.
