Women's Tennis Falls at No. 30 William & Mary

March 7, 2015

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Navy women's tennis team (8-6) fell on the road to #30 William & Mary (10-2), 7-0, on Saturday afternoon. Navy suffered its third straight defeat after opening the spring season at 8-3.

Currently ranked 30th in the ITA national rankings, William & Mary is the highest-ranked opponent Navy has ever faced in its six-year history as a varsity program.

"William & Mary is a very solid team," said head coach Keith Puryear. "They give you very little and that's why they are 30th in the nation. We played no-ad scoring today so some of the scores were a little deceiving, but we did compete well. I think we have learned a lot in these last three matches and we are continuing to improve. We are on the right track heading into the next portion of our schedule."

The nationally 48th-ranked doubles team of Leeza Nemchinov and Jeltje Loomans defeated Navy's Summer Ralston and Claudia Mackenize at the No. 1 position, 6-2. The Tribe also picked up doubles wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots to win the doubles point.

Nemchinov, who is ranked 44th in the nation as a singles player, defeated Navy's Sam Droop at the No. 1 position, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7).

Freshman Kristine Rojo pushed her match at No. 6 singles against Cecily Wuenscher to a third-set tiebreak. Rojo won the first set, 7-6 (7-4), and then Wuenscher won the second set, 7-5. Wuenscher then won the third-set tiebreaker at 10-8.

William & Mary won in straight sets at the No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 singles positions.

Navy will return to action tomorrow (Sunday) by hosting a doubleheader at the Tose Family Tennis Center in the Brigade Sports Complex. The Mids will host Marist at 9:00 AM and Towson at 2:00 PM.
