Annie Foky tallied six saves for her 12th win in net
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Led by senior goalkeeper Annie Foky's six saves and one caused turnover, the Navy women's lacrosse team (12-3, 6-1 Patriot League) defeated Holy Cross (4-11, 3-4 PL), 11-6, Saturday evening at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
"We have talked about it since the beginning of the year that a good ride defense will translate into more offensive possessions," Navy head coach Cindy Timchal said. "The combination of not allowing Holy Cross to get in a flow offensively along with Annie's [Foky] solid game in net helped us get a crucial win over a very tough Crusader squad."
Navy kept Holy Cross' offense at bay in the first half, allowing just one goal on six shots. Seven of the Mids eight caused turnovers came in the first 30 minutes with junior Molly Doyle (Ivyland, Pa.) tallying a game-high two.
Senior Casey Browne (Miller Place, N.Y.) opened the scoring for the Mids, tallying the game's first goal with 1:01 off the clock. Holy Cross senior midfielder Laura Ryan responded back with the Crusaders first goal to tie the contest, 1-1, with 25:42 left in the half.
Navy then ended the half on a 4-0 run to grab a four-goal lead, 5-1. Sophomore Morgan Young (Baltimore, Md.) led the Mids' charge, recording the final three goals with two coming off free-position chances.
Down 5-1 to start the second half, Holy Cross recorded two of the next three goals to cut the deficit to three, 6-3, with 27:15 left in the contest. Maddie Ward and Lissie Russert each tallied their lone goals during the stretch.
After Navy's ride defense forced Holy Cross' goalkeeper Katie Boyle to turn the ball, Young picked up the ground ball and dished to senior attack Loren Generi (Bayport, N.Y.), who drew the foul for a free-position. Generi beat Boyle to the near post to record her 200th career and gave Navy a four-goal lead, 7-3, with 22:05 remaining.
Holy Cross' Ryan came back with her second goal of the game to bring the Crusaders back within three, 7-4, with 19:25 left.
The Mids then extended their lead to five, 9-4, as freshman Jenna Collins (Clarksville, Md.) and Browne tallied back-to-back goals in a span of 1:35. Browne's goal gave Navy its second hat trick of the game as she joined Young, who tallied the game's first hat trick in the first half.
Holy Cross looked to begin its come back with goals from Avery Giorgio and Kaitlin Concilio to cut the deficit back down to three, 9-6, with 3:43 left in the game. Navy however responded with two-straight goals, one from Generi and the other from Jenna Collins, both on empty-net chances to lock up the 11-6 victory.
Navy led Holy Cross in four categories, in shots, 31-18, ground balls, 19-18, draw controls, 10-9 and free-position chances, 5-of-9 to 2-of-4. Gallagher scored one goal to extended her streak of consecutive games with a point to 32.
Navy and Loyola will play for the Patriot League regular-season title and hosting rights for the league tournament on Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Opening draw is set for 12 noon and will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
