Aug. 27, 2015 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's soccer team (1-1) will host VMI on Friday (7 PM) and No. 25 UConn (1 PM) on Sunday at the
Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Both matches will be streamed live and for free on PatriotLeague.TV with Joe Miller on the call. Live statistics will be available on navysports.com.
KEY NOTES FOR VMI:
• After a 2014 finish of 3-15-1, VMI will be led by first-year head coach Chris Bergmann, who has got his team off to a 1-1 start in 2015. The Keydets fell to Youngstown State, 1-0, before defeating Hampton, 16-0.
• Navy is 5-0 lifetime against VMI and 3-0 at home against the Keydets.
• The Mids have outscored VMI, 13-1, in the last five games, posting four-straight shutouts.
• Like Navy, VMI's squad has a heavy contingent of underclassmen, holding a combined 17 freshmen and sophomores and just eight total upperclassmen (juniors - 5, seniors - 3).
• The Keydets are coming off a 16-0 win over Hampton with three players recording hat tricks and three different goalkeepers combined for the shutout.
KEY NOTES FOR #25 UCONN:
• UConn enters 2015 after a 14-5-5 record and an American Athletic Conference Tournament title, defeating USF, 0-0, (3-2 in penalty kicks) in 2014. The Huskies advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, following a 2-0 victory over New Hampshire in Storrs, Conn.
• Navy is 3-2-2 all-time against AAC programs, owning a winning or tied record over UCF (1-0), Temple (1-0-1), Tulsa (1-0) and USF (0-0-1). The Mids are 0-2 against UConn and have not faced Cincinnati, Memphis or SMU.
• The Huskies are the preseason favorites to win their conference and junior forward Rachel Hill unanimously garnered preseason Offensive Player of the Year laurels. Hill earned the Co-Offensive Player of the Year honor last season after recording 33 points on 15 goals and three assists.
• UConn comes into Sunday's match ranked 25th in the NSCAA national poll.
BOUNCING BACK
• Navy has historically found a way to bounce back, recording a 65-23-9 mark following a loss. The Mids will try to continue that kind of success on Friday against VMI after a tough 2-0 loss to Maryland on Sunday.
• Over the last 10 seasons, Navy is 26-6-6 after dropping a match to an opponent, including 4-0 marks during the 2009 and 2013 seasons.
• Following a Maryland loss, the Mids are 6-1-1 all-time and 5-0 when playing in Annapolis the next game. Navy has outscored its opponent 12-4 in Annapolis.
GABARRA vs. TSANTIRIS
• It will be the third time that Navy head coach Carin Gabarra and UConn head coach Len Tsantiris will coach against one another on the pitch, but these two coaches have faced off before on different terms.
• The first time that Gabarra and Tsantiris faced off was when Gabarra was attending UC-Santa Barbara and playing for the women's soccer team, while Tsantiris was coaching for the Huskies. UConn and UC-Santa Barbara played against one another in the Cortland State Tournament on Sept. 23, 1984. The match ended in a 1-1 tie.
CARDIAC KIDS
• Friday, Aug. 21 match against UMBC was nothing short of keeping the fans on their toes, as Navy stormed back with three-straight goals in 18 minutes, two of which were in the final 10 minutes to down the Retrievers.
• The last time Navy came back from two goals was on Sept. 8, 2013 versus St. Bonaventure. Navy's Morgan Dankanich and Paloma Perez tallied two goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation before Kaylie Davidson scored the golden goal in the 92nd minute.
• It was just the fourth time in the last 10 seasons that Navy recorded back-to-back goals in the final 10 minutes to either win or force overtime to get the win.
FRESHMAN FIRSTS
• Navy's freshmen wasted very little time making an impact on the team, tallying two goals in the final 10 minutes of the Mids' season-opener versus UMBC to earn a decisive 3-2 win. Mary August scored the first goal in the 83rd minute and Margaret Woodward followed up in the 84th minute to tally their first career goals.
HOME SWEET HOME
• The Glenn Warner Soccer Facility has created quite the home field advantage for the Navy soccer program with an all-time record of 171-43-18 (.746).
• Following its home-opening win over UMBC, 3-2, Navy is on an eight-game winning streak at home and unbeaten in the last 11 (9-0-2).
• The Mids record for consecutive home wins in a season is 14, which was set in the 2006 season. Over multiple seasons, Navy has strung together 15-straight home wins from 1997 to 1998.
