FARMVILLE, Va. - A late goal in the 85th minute gave Longwood (2-1-0) a 2-1 win over visiting Navy (2-2-1) in a men's soccer match at the Athletics Complex on Friday evening. Longwood's Zach Crandall scored the game-winning goal with just five minutes to play. Willy Miezan sent a cross into the box and Crandall finished from seven yards out.
Longwood opened the scoring in the 49th minute when Miezan scored from the top of the box. It was Miezan's fifth goal in just three games this season.
Navy evened the game at 1-1 in the 72nd minute on Aubrey Jones' penalty kick. Sophomore Mark Shiiba was fouled in the box and Jones stepped up to convert the PK. Jones has scored a goal in three straight games and leads the team with three goals this year.
Jones also had a great chance in the 67th minute but his shot on a free kick went off the cross bar. Sophomore Thomas Moore had two good chances to score in the final 10 minutes, including on a header off a corner kick, but the attempt was saved by Longwood goalkeeper Carl Carpenter.
Navy's last chance came as the final buzzer sounded. Brock Dudley served a ball into the box and Derek Vogel's header went just wide.
Navy goalkeeper Jackson Morgan made four saves for the Mids. Freshman Ericson Bean made a great defensive play as he dove to block a ball in the 69th minute after Miezan got around Morgan. Carpenter made six saves for Longwood to post his second win of the year.
Navy outshot Longwood, 15-10, and had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. Through five games, Navy has yet to be outshot this season.
Navy was playing shorthanded on the attacking front, as the team was without the services of forwards Jamie Dubyoski, Alex Evans and Daniel Camuti.
"We have been trying to adjust to the loss of Jamie, Alex and Daniel and that's three key players in our front four," said Navy head coach Dave Brandt. "I don't think we have found the right combinations yet. But we did still have a number of chances that could have gone in tonight. We were a little unlucky on some and their keeper also made some good saves on us."
In both of Navy's losses this season, the team has controlled the run of play and held wide margins in shots, but untimely defensive mistakes have proved costly.
"We paid for our mistakes defensively and we need to correct those," said Brandt. "We can't defend like that and win games."
Longwood takes a 4-3 lead in the all-time series against Navy. The Mids won each of the last two meetings before Friday's game.
Navy will next play at No. 4 Maryland on Monday at 7 PM. Navy beat then-No. 10 Maryland in Annapolis last season, 2-1.
