Sprint Football Shuts Out Mansfield, 51-0

Sept. 26, 2015

Final Stats

MANSFIELD, Pa. - Behind a well-rounded team effort and touchdowns from each of its three units, the Navy sprint football team (2-0) rolled to a 51-0 win on the road at Mansfield (0-2). A 400-yard advantage in total yards and four caused turnovers were leading factors in the Mids' first CSFL victory of the year.

"Although the scoreboard and stats may not reflect the battle that took place today, this was a well-coached Mansfield team that held our offense at bay for most of the second and third quarters," said head coach Major Jeff Polson, USMC. "Our defense buckled down and came up with some big turnovers and special teams plays that proved to be the difference in this game."

One week after totaling 414 yards on offense versus Longwood, Navy came out on Saturday and recorded 507 yards versus Mansfield. This output was the most since Oct. 18, 2014 when the Mids notched 529 against Cornell. Senior running back Eric Wellmon (Wallkill, N.Y.) led the rushing attack with 142 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Quarterback Nick Deterding (Jr., Lindsborg, Kan.) and slot back Corey Garcia (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) got in on the rushing action with totals of 73 and 42 yards, respectively. As a unit, Navy rushed for 332 yards.

Through the air, Deterding was 12 of 21 for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Garcia was Deterding's favorite target with five catches for 58 yards, while Matthew Hite (Sr., Chapin, S.C.) flashed his speed with 60 of his 73 total receiving yards coming on long, downfield first quarter touchdown.

Navy's defense was equally as impressive on Saturday as the unit stymied Mansfield's offense and held the Mounties to just 107 total yards, 103 through the air and four on the ground. The Mids' defensive line was constantly in the backfield as the starting quartet of Marquis White (Sr., Easton, Mass.), Temple Sloan (Sr., Raleigh, N.C.), Hardy Davis (Sr., Dallas, Texas) and Blake Papet (Jr., Forest, Va.) combined for 10 tackles for loss, seven sacks and two forced fumbles. White led the group with four tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks, while Sloan had three TFLs and 2.5 sacks, as well as a fumble recovery and return for a touchdown. Davis recorded a team-high eight tackles.

Senior Dan Gilmore (Mansfield, Mass.) flashed his prowess on both defense and special teams as he made three tackles with one behind the line of scrimmage, as well as returned a punt 63 yards for a third quarter touchdown.

The teams began the game in a scoreless stalemate over the first 11:19 before a nine-play 63-yard drive resulted in Navy's first touchdown at 3:41 courtesy of an eight-yard rush by Deterding. The first-year quarterback went to the air for the Mids' next score as he connected with a streaking Hite for a 60-yard pass-and-catch just 2:52 later.

Up 13-0 after one quarter, Navy put nine points up on the scoreboard in the second period. A 32-yard field goal by Brett Deters (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) started the scoring before the Mids' defense got involved with a fumble return touchdown by Sloan. White started the action with a sack and forced fumble of Mansfield's quarterback Anthony O'Connell before Sloan picked up the loose ball and sprinted in from 53 yards out.

Navy continued putting the pressure on Mansfield after halftime and quickly increased the score from 22-0 to 30-0 in just 12 seconds of play in the third quarter. On the first play of the half, a 65-yard handoff and rush by Wellmon gave the Mids their fourth touchdown of the day; a two-point conversion from Garcia to Michael Byrne (Sr., Coronado, Calif.) capped the scoring drive.

Over 15 minutes went by before the next points were scored as Deterding and Hite connected for their second touchdown of the game. With the score 37-0, Gilmore got special teams involved with a 63-yard return of a Sean Green punt at the 12:31 mark of play in the fourth. That punt return touchdown was the first by a Midshipman since Tracy Daniels scored from 58 yards out at Princeton on Sept. 22, 2012.

Mac Lavis (Orinda, Calif.), the Mids' breakout player from week one, saw the field in the fourth quarter and immediately his appearance paid dividends for Navy as on his fourth rushing attempt of the game, the sophomore scored from six yards out to make it 51-0.

The final 5:08 of play would be scoreless as the Mids improved to 2-0 on the year and 1-0 in CSFL with a 51-0 final.

For the game, Navy outgained Mansfield, 507 to 107 and held the Mounties to just a 1.6-yards per play average. On the ground, the Mids outrushed their opponents, 332 to 4.

"This was a well fought game," remarked Polson. "We learned a lot on both sides of the ball and have a lot of work to do this week in preparation for a tough Penn team. We hope we will have a strong home crowd in attendance on Friday night at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium in a matchup of two undefeated teams."

Navy will be back in action next Friday, Oct. 2 with its first CSFL conference home game of the year. At 7 p.m., the Mids will host the Quakers of Penn (2-0), who are coming off a 34-18 win over Post on Saturday.
