Women's Basketball Drops Star Game to Army West Point

Jan. 23, 2016

Final Stats

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Army West Point jumped out to an early 16-2 lead and led by double figures over the remainder of a 75-38 victory over the Navy women's basketball team Saturday afternoon at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

"Honestly, I don't know if it means much," said Navy head coach Stefanie Pemper about playing a game in the venue. "The game, the Star, meant a lot to us. I don't know if we really look back on this as an experience of playing in the Garden. Before the game it was certainly something and a neat opportunity, but not so much now."

The Black Knights (16-2, 7-1) connected on six of their first seven shots from the field while holding the Mids (9-10, 3-5) without a made field goal â€"â€" Navy was 2-2 from the foul line â€"â€" until the four minute mark of the first quarter. Army West Point would soon build a 21-4 advantage before the first quarter ended with it in front, 25-9.

"We needed to execute our defensive game plan a little better," said Pemper. "At the 16-2 mark, they (Army) finally took a shot we wanted them to take. Prior to that the looks they got were exactly what we didn't want them to get. They executed really well, and obviously hit those shots."

Both teams scored 12 points in the second quarter, but then the Black Knights -- who employed a full-court press with their starters until there was 2:10 left in the final period and they were leading by a game-high 39 points â€"â€" outscored the Mids 16-8 in the third quarter and 22-9 in the fourth.

Army West Point held advantages over Navy in points scored in the paint, 36-10, points scored after turnovers, 21-10, second chance points, 16-9, and bench points, 22-13. The Black Knights outshot the Mids, 45.5-31.4 percent and were 10-17 (58.8%) from the three-point line while Navy was 4-17 (23.5%).

Kelsey Minato was 8-21 from the floor, including 4-8 from three-point range, to score 22 points for the Black Knights. Taylor Dunham's nine points led Navy's scoring effort.

Navy, which will remain in New York City until the state of emergency declared by the mayor and governor is lifted and the roads are safe to travel home, will play host to Holy Cross Jan. 30 in Alumni Hall.
