Oct. 2, 2016 STATEN ISLAND & BRONX, N.Y. - In its first-ever regular season trip to New York City, the Navy water polo team dropped a pair of Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference road games on Sunday. Beginning with an 11 a.m. matchup with the Wagner Seahawks (5-12, 2-5 MAWPC) and concluding with a 4 p.m. contest at Fordham (6-8, 3-4 MAWPC), the Mids (6-8, 1-5 MAWPC) fell twice by scores of 15-13 and 13-9, respectively.
Wagner 15 - Navy 13
The Mids and Seahawks battled over 32 minutes in a tightly contested game that saw the host Seahawks take the lead in the first quarter and hold on for a two-goal victory. David Huber (Sr., Fort Washington, Pa.) led Navy with a game-high six goals.
Huber netted the first score of the competition with a goal at the 5:27 mark of the first quarter. After two straight Wagner markers, Nik Galvan (Fr., Henderson, Nev.) tied the game for the final time at 2-2 at 2:58. Three unanswered Seahawk scores down the stretch of the first period gave the home team a 5-2 at the first break.
Navy fought back to cut its deficit to two goals at halftime with a three-to-two scoring advantage in the second period. Jared Castillo (Jr., League City, Texas), Huber and Jack Orchard (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) all netted goals for the Mids in the period.
Coming out of halftime down 7-5, Huber's third goal of the game at the 5:51 mark of the third quarter made it 7-6. Back-to-back goals by the Seahawks shot the first-year NCAA team back in the lead by three goals at 9-6. The teams traded scores over the final 3:36 to close the stanza at 11-8. Orchard netted his second goal of the game at 2:14.
In the fourth quarter, Navy opened the period on a 3-1 goal run to tighten the game to 12-11 by 4:14. Huber found the back of the net twice during the span, while Orchard capped his hat trick. Two straight Wagner goals jumped its lead back out to three at 14-11. Goals by Huber and Matt Skowronski (Jr., Oak Hill, Va.) in the final 59 seconds cut the Mids' deficit to one goal before a late marker by the Seahawks with six seconds left made the final score, 15-13.
Fordham 13 - Navy 9
In its second game of the day, a back-and-forth contest broke in the host Rams' favor during the second quarter and Fordham held onto a lead over the final 20 minutes to earn its second victory over Navy in a week. Huber and Taylor Peterson (Sr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) spearheaded the Mids' scoring attack versus the Rams with three goals each.
Peterson started the game's scoring with the first two goals in the opening 3:55 of play. Two scores by Fordham in the final 1:43 left the contest even at the end of the first quarter.
After a brief lead by the Rams at 3-2, Huber netted his first goal of the game at 7:10 to tie the contest for the second and final time. Over the final five minutes of the second period, Fordham outscored Navy, 3-1 to break open a 6-4 advantage before halftime. Brendan Metcalf (Sr., Frisco, Texas) scored the lone goal for the Mids during this span as he converted a six-on-five opportunity.
Fordham pulled ahead further over the third quarter as the host Rams outscored the Mids by a goal during those eight minutes. Skowronski and Huber notched tallies for Navy at 3:51 and 0:27, respectively.
Down 9-6 with one quarter of regulation action remaining, Peterson's third goal of the game 45 seconds into the fourth period tightened the game to two. Two goals by the Mids versus four by the Rams over the final 4:32 resulted in the visiting squad taking a 13-9 loss. Huber and Taylor Bernhardt (So., Annapolis, Md.) netted Navy's final two scores.
In goal, Ronan Williams (Fr., Severna Park, Md.) was credited with 10 saves on 23 shots on net by Fordham.
The Mids will be back in action next weekend with single road games on Saturday and Sunday. First up is a 7 p.m. matchup in Lewisburg, Pa. against Bucknell. The brief road trip concludes on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Princeton.
