Navy Squash Extends Winning Streak

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland - Capturing a trio of victories at the Navy Round Robin on Friday and Saturday, the Navy squash team pushed its winning streak to five in a row. The 5-0 Mids earned a 9-0 sweep over Fordham to kick off the tournament on Friday evening and followed up wtih a 9-0 victory over Dickinson and a hard-fought 5-4 win against Virginia.

The Mids had it on cruise control in their first two wins of the weekend, winning 16 of the 18 matches by 3-0 decisions. Dickinson sophomore Cory Litman won the opening game against Navy's Jamie Kjorlien (So. / Greenwich, Conn.), before Kjorlien went on to win the next three to take the match. Meanwhile, Vincent Warzecha pushed Navy team captain Randy Beck (Sr. / Lafayette Hill, Pa.) to five games where Beck would come from behind for an 11-13, 12-10, 11-1, 12-14, 11-7 victory.

Just an hour after the Dickinson match, the Mids battled Virginia, who was playing its first match of the weekend. Although freshmen Owen Davis (Rydal, Pa.) and Michael Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.), along with Beck earned victories in their matches, Virginia held a one-match advantage with the final two matches remaining on the court. Jack Herold (Jr. / Chicago, Ill.) defeated the Cavs' top player, Toby Hansford, in a three-game sweep, 11-8, 11-8, 11-7, while Dylan Sweeney (So. / New York, N.Y.) sealed the Navy win with a 3-1 triumph over Virginia sophomore Jarett Odrich.

Three of the Mids' four losses to the Cavaliers were decided in five games. Navy's Senen Ubina (So. / Greenwich, Conn.) dropped the fifth game to Mason Black, 13-11, while Will Walker (Sr. / Scarborough, N.Y.) fell in the fifth, 12-10, to Henry Woodworth and Reed Whitney (Sr. / Ladue, Mo.) succumbed to Harrison Kapp in the fifth, 11-1.

The Midshipmen will close out tournament action on Sunday when they face Washington at 9:00 am, followed by Johns Hopkins at 11:30 am. Both matches will be played at the Halsey Field House International Squash Courts and admission is free.
